in our series, this is our 7th post, and we come to the hadeeth which said that ali is wali after me. this hadeeth is one which proves the caliphate of mola ali asws without any doubt,

because in this hadeeth, nasibis cannot say that it is wali=friend

ali asws was, for sure, not an enemy of muslims in the lifetime of holy prophet

he was a friend even then, so this naturally means that it is wilayat after death of holy prophet asws

so, let us come to the ahadeeth,

this hadeeth comes to us from three sahaba atleast with sahih sanad

a sanad which even sunni scholars testify to be sahih

so, we divide the hadeeth into three parts: from imran bin haseen, from buraida, from ibn abbass




we are quoting this hadeeth from khasais-e-ali, online version

here, nisai gave two versions of the hadeeth; the chain is almost same for both

we quote the longer version , and the name of the chapter is also that ali asws is wali after me, it says:

برنا ) احمد بن شعيب ، قال : اخبرنا قتيبة بن سعيد ، قال : حدثنا جعفر يعني ابن سليمان ، عن يزيد ، عن مطرف بن عبد الله ، عن عمران بن حصين قال : جهز رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم جيشا واستعمل عليهم علي بن أبي طالب ، فمضى في السرية فأصاب جارية فأنكروا عليه ، وتعاقد اربعة من اصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا بعثنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أخبرناه ما صنع  .
وكان المسلمون إذا رجعوا من السفر بدؤا برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فسلموا عليه فانصرفوا إلى رحالهم . فلما قدمت السرية سلموا على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقام احد الاربعة فقال : يا رسول الله ، ألم تر ان علي بن أبي طالب صنع

كذا وكذا . فأعرض عنه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، ثم قام الثاني وقال : مثل ذلك ، ثم الثالث فقال مقالته ، ثم قام الرابع فقال : مثل ما قالوا . فأقبل إليهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم والغضب يبصر في وجهه ، فقال : ما تريدون من علي  ؟ ان عليا مني وانا منه ، وهو ولي كل مؤمن بعدي ) .

imran bin haseen narrates that prophet prepared an army, and made ali ameer; ali got a slave girl after the war; people did not like it; and four decided that when they will meet prophet, they will speak against ali;

when muslim would return, they would meet prophet (it was their custom); and then they would leave for home; so when they retunred from war, they met prophet, and one of the four stood up; and said

o prophet, do you not see ali that he has done like this?

so prophet turned away his face from him;

another person stood up, and said the same

then thrid one stood up, and said the same;

then fourth one stood up, and said the same;

then prophet turned to them with anger on his face; and said

“what do you wish about ali? no doubt ali is from me, and i am from him; and he is wali of every momin after me”

this is the short version of the hadeeth.

4-abu ishaq haweeni athari said: isnaad sahih, hakim said it is sahih as per condition of muslim and dhabi kept quiet, so it is like what he (hakim) said

14- ibn hajar asqalani said: narrated by tirmidhi from imran with qawi (strong sanad)

[al asaba, vol 4, page 468, under heading ali ibn abi talib]

15- Hussein saleem asad said: narrators are narrators of sahih; ibn haban mentioned on the chain of abu yala

[musnad abu yala, vol 1, page 293, narration 355]

16- mohammad abdul mohsin alturki said: hadeeth is hasan for there is jafar bin suliman and he is sudooq (truthful)

[musnad abu daood tayalis, vol 2 , page 168 , narration 868]

17- wasi ullah bin mohammad abbass said: isnaad hasan

[fadail us sahaba, ahmad bin hanbal, vol 2, page 655, narration 1035; and vol 2, page 673, narration 1060; vol 2, page 709, narration 1104]

18- hafiz badakhsani mentioned it in nazl ul abrar, so it is sahih

[nazl ul abrar bema sihah manaqib ahlubait athar, page 54]

( أخبرنا ) أحمد بن شعيب ، قال : أخبرنا واصل بن عبد الاعلى الكوفي ، عن ابن فضيل ، عن الاجلح ، عن عبد الله بن بريدة عن ابيه قال : بعثنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى اليمن مع خالد ابن الوليد ، وبعث عليا رضي الله عنه على جيش آخر ،

وقال : إن التقيتما فعلي كرم الله وجهه على الناس ، وان تفرقتما فكل واحد منكما على جنده . فلقينا بني زيد  من اهل اليمن وظفر المسلمون على المشركين ، فقاتلنا المقاتلة وسبينا الذرية ، فاصطفى علي جارية لنفسه من السبي ، وكتب بذلك خالد بن الوليد إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأمرني أن أنال منه .

قال : فدفعت الكتاب إليه ونلت من علي رضي الله عنه .

فتغير وجه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقال : لا تبغضن يا بريدة لي عليا ، فان عليا مني وأنا منه وهو وليكم بعدي ) .

abdullah bin buraida narrates from his father buraida that prophet send us in leadership of khalid bin waleed to yemen and made ali amir on another army; and ordered that if the two combine, ali will be the leader; and if not, they respective leaders would continue; so we combined in banu zubaid, and muslim got victory on mushriks; and we fought well, and captured many, ali selected a slave girl for himself; khalid wrote this to prophet and told me to take this letter to him; so presented that letter, and complained about ali; so prophet got signs of anger on his face; i said

“i seek protection at this time, you send me with a man, and told me to obey him; so i did what i was sent for”

prophet said

“do not be interested in criticizing ali; and do not have grudge for him; no doubt, he is from me, and i am from him, and he is your wali after me”

3-albani says:- isnaad jayyad (great)

[zilal ul jannat, fi takhreej alsunnah; narration 1187, after authenticating narration of imran bin hasin, he said:- the shahid of hadeeth from buraida is narrated by ahmad from ajlah, and that chain is great, narrators are thiqa, and of sheikhain except ajlah, and he is shia sudooq]

4- abu ishaq haweeni: isnaad hasan

[al-jilli ba takhreej khasais-e-ali, page 93, narration 87]

5-hafiz haithmi: narrated by tirmidhi in short form, and also by ahmad and bazaar, and in it ajlah kundi who is thiqa as per ibn moin; but some people have declared him daif; and rest of narrators of ahmad are narrators of sahih

[majma uz zawaid, vol 9, page 127-128]

and in the end he said about ajlah

there is difference of opinion about ajlah, however, most of them say he is thiqa

[majma uz zawaid, vol 1, page 189]

6- shokani says:- narrated by ahmad are narrators of sahih except ajlah who is thiqa as per ibn moin, and others said he is weak

[dur sahaba, page 223]
