Bukhari mentions in His Saheeh, 6/181, H. 4977

 

حدثنا علي بن عبد الله حدثنا سفيان حدثنا عبدة بن أبي لبابة عن زر بن حبيش ح وحدثنا عاصم عن زر قال سألت أبي بن كعب قلت يا أبا المنذر إن أخاك ابن مسعود يقول كذا وكذا فقال أبي سألت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال لي قيل لي فقلت قال فنحن نقول كما قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم

Volume 6, Book 60, Number 501 :
Narrated by Zirr bin Hubaish

I asked Ubai bin Ka’b, “O Abu AlMundhir! Your brother, Ibn Mas’ud said so-and-so .” Ubai said, “I asked Allah’s Apostle about them, and he said to me ” It was said to me so I said it,” So Ubai added, “So we say as Allah’s Apostle has said.”

Now,

We do not find What did Ibn Ma’sood said actually. However, Ahmad bin Hanbal has mentioned a number of Narrations in His Musnad, 35/113, and These all mention the Fact that it was regarding concept of Ibn Ma’sood regarding Maa’udothain.

We find
21181 – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ زِرٍّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأُبَيٍّ: إِنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ يَقُولُ فِي الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ، فَقَالَ: سَأَلْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْهُمَا، فَقَالَ: “قِيلَ لِي، فَقُلْتُ ” فَأَنَا أَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ

Zir asked Abi that Your Brother Abdullah ibn Ma’sood says regarding Maudatheen. He said : We asked Holy Prophet (asws), and He said: I was told, so I said it. We say what He said

 

Sheikh Shoaib terms it Hadeeth is Authentic, and This Chain is good/Hasan

 

So, we see that A’sim Narrated this narration to Abu Bakr bin Ayash

 

Then we see another Chain

 

21186 – حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ بَهْدَلَةَ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ: إِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ كَانَ لَا يَكْتُبُ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فِي مُصْحَفِهِ، فَقَالَ: “أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخْبَرَنِي: “أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ قَالَ لَهُ: قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ، فَقُلْتُهَا، فَقَالَ: قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ، فَقُلْتُهَا “. فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ مَا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Zir asked Abi: Ibn Ma’sood did not write Maudathain in His Copy of Qura. He said: I testify that Holy Prophet (asws) told us: Jibrail told me to say [ ], So I said. Then He (Jibrael) said [ ], so I said. And We say what Holy Prophet (asws) say. 

 

Here A’sim told Hamad bin Salma, who told Afan who told Ahmad bin Hanbal

Chain has been termed Hasan, and Hadeeth has been termed Saheeh.

 

Then the very next chain says

 

21187 – حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ زِرٍّ، عَنْ أُبَيٍّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، نَحْوَهُ

 

Here, A’sim told Abu Awana, who told Afan. Sheikh Shoaib also termed this chain as Hasan

 

Though these chains are very telling us the complete story. More interesting Chain is this one

 

21189 – حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدةَ، وَعَاصِمٍ، عَنْ زِرٍّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأُبَيٍّ: إِنَّ أَخَاكَ يَحُكُّهُمَا مِنَ الْمُصْحَفِ، قِيلَ لِسُفْيَانَ: ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ؟ فَلَمْ يُنْكِرْ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: “قِيلَ لِي، فَقُلْتُ ” فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَاَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: يَحُكُّهُمَا: الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ، (2) وَلَيْسَا فِي مُصْحَفِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ

Zir asked Abi that Your brother has rubbed it off His Copy of Quran. Sufian was asked: Is it Ibn Ma’sood? He did not reject it. Abi said: We asked Prophet about it, and He said: I was told to say it, So I said it. And We say what was said by Prophet. Sufian said: Rubbed it means Maudatheen, and these were not present in Copy of Quran of Ibn Ma’sood

 

Here, Zir Narrates it to Asim and Abda, who told this to Sufian

Sheikh Shoaib says that Chain is Authentic on terms set by Bukhari and Muslim

 

We have this chain present in Musnad Hameedi, 1/367, Narration 378. And it says

 

378 – حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ: ثنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ، وَعَاصِمُ ابْنُ بَهْدَلَةَ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا زِرَّ بْنَ حُبَيْشٍ يَقُولُ: سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ إِنَّ أَخَاكَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَحْكِيهِمَا مِنَ الْمُصْحَفِ قَالَ إِنِّي سَأَلَتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قِيلَ لِي «قُلْ» فَقُلْتُ: فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Zir asked Abi about Maudatheen, He said: O Aba Mandhar ! Your brother Ibn Ma’sood rubbed it off His copy of Quran. He replied: I asked Holy Prophet (asws); so He told me that I was told to SAY it, so I SAID it. and We say what was said by Holy Prophet (asws)

 

This means that Sufain got the news of this Narration being in regards to Maudathain. And He did mention it in one way or other. Though wordings do change a bit, but still, He did mention it.

 

The chain of Bukhari is the same like this one, with the difference that Bukhari took Narration from Ali ibn Madaini, who took it from Sufian.

Dhabi wrote about Madaini that He is Imam, Hujjat, Amir ul Momineen in Hadeeth.

Regardless of the fact who made Tehreef; Ali ibn Madaini or Bukhari; Its for sure that Narration has been victim of Tehreef
