In this article, we will analyze some narrations of Ayesha in order to see if she remembered narrations from Holy Prophet asws correctly and transmitted these correctly. We will provide a clear acceptance from Ayesha where she accepts that She forgot Narration at the end of this article, and would support this with few examples.  Let us start with examples first

1-INCIDENT OF JEW LADY AND PUNISHMENT IN GRAVE

There is a very interesting incident in which We find that a Jew lady talked to Ayesha about Punishment in Grave. Now, Ayesha narrated this to different people, and accounts vary in all Narrations. Especially interesting are the remarks of Holy Prophet (as mentioned by Ayesha) regarding punishment of Grave. In some Narrations You will read that He negated it, in others He said it is for jews, and still in others, he accepted it in totality. So His response is totally different in what is apparently an incident which took place only once. Any intellectual mind would agree that the Jew lady would have talked to Ayesha on this issue once only, not that She would come again and again, and this incident would take place again and again, and Holy Prophet would give different replies. Anyways, let us see the Narrations.

NARRATION NO. 1:-

 حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى، حَدَّثَنَا قُدَامَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْعَامِرِيَّ، عَنْ جَسْرَةَ قَالَتْ: حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ قَالَتْ: دَخَلَتْ عَلَيَّ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ، فَقُلْتُ: كَذَبْتِ، فَقَالَتْ: بَلَى، إِنَّا لَنَقْرِضُ مِنْهُ الثَّوْبَ وَالْجِلْدَ، فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ، وَقَدْ ارْتَفَعَتْ أَصْوَاتُنَا، فَقَالَ: ” مَا هَذِهِ؟ ” فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا قَالَتْ: فَقَالَ: ” صَدَقَتْ “، قَالَتْ: فَمَا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ يَوْمِئِذٍ إِلَّا قَالَ فِي دُبُرِ الصَّلَاةِ: ” اللهُمَّ رَبَّ جِبْرِيلَ، وَمِيكَائِيلَ، وَإِسْرَافِيلَ، أَعِذْنِي مِنْ حَرِّ النَّارِ، وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

We find that Ayesha says
“Once a Jew lady came to me and said that punishment in grave is due to the fact that a person does not save himself from the sprinkling of particles of urine on his cloth. She (Ayesha) negated that. But jew lady insisted on it and said that we scratch off the cloth or skin of body where it gets particles of urine. Holy Prophet asws had gone for prayers. During the conversation our voices raised; so Holy Prophet asws asked: what is the matter? So I told Holy Prophet asws about that saying of Jew lady. So Holy Prophet asws replied: She said the truth. And after that day whenever Holy Prophet asws offered prayers, he prayed in loud voice: o Lord of Jibrail, Mikayel and Israfel! protect me from heat of hell and punishment in grave”

NARRATION NO. 2

حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ يَهُودِيَّةً كَانَتْ تَخْدُمُهَا، فَلَا تَصْنَعُ عَائِشَةُ إِلَيْهَا شَيْئًا مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ، إِلَّا قَالَتْ لَهَا الْيَهُودِيَّةُ: وَقَاكِ اللهُ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ، قَالَتْ: فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيَّ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَلْ لِلْقَبْرِ عَذَابٌ قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ؟ قَالَ: ” لَا، وَعَمَّ ذَاكَ؟ ” قَالَتْ: هَذِهِ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ لَا نَصْنَعُ إِلَيْهَا مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا،  إِلَّا قَالَتْ: وَقَاكِ

اللهُ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ، قَالَ: “ كَذَبَتْ يَهُودُ  ، وَهُمْ عَلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَكْذَبُ ، لَا عَذَابَ دُونَ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ “، قَالَتْ: ثُمَّ مَكَثَ بَعْدَ ذَاكَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ يَمْكُثَ، فَخَرَجَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ نِصْفَ النَّهَارِ مُشْتَمِلًا بِثَوْبِهِ، مُحْمَرَّةً عَيْنَاهُ، وَهُوَ يُنَادِي بِأَعْلَى صَوْتِهِ: ” أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، أَظَلَّتْكُمُ الْفِتَنُ كَقِطَعِ اللَّيْلِ الْمُظْلِمِ، أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ بَكَيْتُمْ  كَثِيرًا وَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلًا، أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، اسْتَعِيذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، فَإِنَّ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ حَقٌّ “

Ayesha says
“a Jew lady use to serve her very much. Whenever Ayesha would do anything nice to her, she would pray that may Allah protect you from punishment in grave. Once Holy Prophet asws came to her house, so she asked: o Prophet asws! Will there be punishment in grave before qayamat? Holy Prophet replied: No, why are you asking? She asked: whenever I do good to this Jew lady, she says that may Allah protect you. Holy Prophet replied: Jews lie; they attribute lie to Allah, there will be no punishment before Qayamat.
After some time, as much as Allah wished; Holy Prophet asws came in mid-day. Holy Prophet asws came out wrapped in cloth in such a state that his eyes were red and he was saying in loud voice: o People! You people have been covered by fitnahs like dark nights, o People! If you knew what I knew, you would cry more and laugh less, o people! Seek protection from punishment in grave and that punishment in grave is true.

NARRATION NO. 3

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَتْ: دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعِنْدِي امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ، وَهِيَ تَقُولُ لِي: أَشَعَرْتِ أَنَّكُمْ تُفْتَنُونَ فِي الْقُبُورِ، فَارْتَاعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَقَالَ: ” إِنَّمَا تُفْتَنُ  الْيَهُودُ “، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَلَبِثْنَا لَيَالِيَ،  ثُمَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” هَلْ شَعَرْتِ أَنَّهُ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّكُمْ تُفْتَنُونَ فِي الْقُبُورِ؟ ” قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ يَسْتَعِيذُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

“once Holy Prophet asws came to my house, and a Jew lady was sitting with me and she was saying that do you know that we would be tested in graves? Holy Prophet asws turned his attention to us and said that only Jews would be tested. After some time Holy Prophet asws told me that do you know that I have received revelation that we would be tested in graves…. And after that I always saw him seeking protection from punishment in grave’

NARRATION NO. 4

 حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ، وَهِيَ تَقُولُ: أُشْعِرْتُ أَنَّكُمْ تُفْتَنُونَ فِي الْقُبُورِ؟ فَارْتَاعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَقَالَ: ” إِنَّمَا تُفْتَنُ يَهُوَدُ “ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَلَبِثْنَا لَيَالِيَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” أُشْعِرْتُ أَنَّهُ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّكُمْ تُفْتَنُونَ فِي الْقُبُورِ؟ ” وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدُ يَسْتَعِيذُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَ: سَأَلَتْهَا امْرَأَةٌ يَهُودِيَّةٌ فَأَعْطَتْهَا، فَقَالَتْ لَهَا: أَعَاذَكِ اللهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، فَأَنْكَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ ذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ لَهُ فَقَالَ: لَا، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ: إِنَّهُ ” أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّكُمْ تُفْتَنُونَ فِي قُبُورِكُمْ “

NARRATION NO. 6:-

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ ذَكْوَانَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: جَاءَتْ يَهُودِيَّةٌ، فَاسْتَطْعَمَتْ عَلَى بَابِي، فَقَالَتْ: أَطْعِمُونِي، أَعَاذَكُمُ اللهُ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ. قَالَتْ: فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَحْبِسُهَا (1) حَتَّى جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَا تَقُولُ هَذِهِ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ؟ قَالَ: ” وَمَا تَقُولُ؟ ” قُلْتُ: تَقُولُ: أَعَاذَكُمُ اللهُ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ مَدًّا يَسْتَعِيذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ” أَمَّا فِتْنَةُ الدَّجَّالِ: فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ نَبِيٌّ إِلَّا قَدْ حَذَّرَ أُمَّتَهُ، وَسَأُحَذِّرُكُمُوهُ تَحْذِيرًا لَمْ يُحَذِّرْهُ نَبِيٌّ أُمَّتَهُ، إِنَّهُ أَعْوَرُ، وَاللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَيْسَ بِأَعْوَرَ، مَكْتُوبٌ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ كَافِرٌ، يَقْرَؤُهُ كُلُّ مُؤْمِنٍ. فَأَمَّا فِتْنَةُ الْقَبْرِ: فَبِي تُفْتَنُونَ، وَعَنِّي تُسْأَلُونَ، فَإِذَا كَانَ الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ، أُجْلِسَ فِي قَبْرِهِ غَيْرَ فَزِعٍ، وَلَا مَشْعُوفٍ،  ثُمَّ يُقَالُ لَهُ: فِيمَ كُنْتَ؟ فَيَقُولُ: فِي الْإِسْلَامِ؟ فَيُقَالُ: مَا هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي كَانَ

فِيكُمْ؟ فَيَقُولُ: مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، جَاءَنَا بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَصَدَّقْنَاهُ، فَيُفْرَجُ لَهُ فُرْجَةٌ قِبَلَ النَّارِ، فَيَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا يَحْطِمُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: انْظُرْ إِلَى مَا وَقَاكَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، ثُمَّ يُفْرَجُ لَهُ فُرْجَةٌ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، فَيَنْظُرُ إِلَى زَهْرَتِهَا وَمَا فِيهَا، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: هَذَا مَقْعَدُكَ مِنْهَا، وَيُقَالُ: عَلَى الْيَقِينِ كُنْتَ، وَعَلَيْهِ مِتَّ، وَعَلَيْهِ تُبْعَثُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ. وَإِذَا كَانَ الرَّجُلُ السَّوْءُ، أُجْلِسَ فِي قَبْرِهِ فَزِعًا مَشْعُوفًا  ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: فِيمَ كُنْتَ؟ فَيَقُولُ: لَا أَدْرِي، فَيُقَالُ: مَا هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي كَانَ فِيكُمْ؟ فَيَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ النَّاسَ يَقُولُونَ قَوْلًا، فَقُلْتُ كَمَا قَالُوا، فَتُفْرَجُ لَهُ فُرْجَةٌ قِبَلَ الْجَنَّةِ، فَيَنْظُرُ إِلَى زَهْرَتِهَا وَمَا فِيهَا، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ: انْظُرْ إِلَى مَا صَرَفَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَنْكَ، ثُمَّ يُفْرَجُ لَهُ فُرْجَةٌ قِبَلَ النَّارِ، فَيَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا يَحْطِمُ  بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا، وَيُقَالُ لَهُ: هَذَا مَقْعَدُكَ مِنْهَا، كُنْتَ عَلَى الشَّكِّ، وَعَلَيْهِ مِتَّ، وَعَلَيْهِ تُبْعَثُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ، ثُمَّ يُعَذَّبُ “.

Ayesha says
“once a Jew lady came on my door and asked for food and said that feed me, May Allah protect you from Dajjal and punishment in grave. I stopped her with me till Holy Prophet asws came. So I asked him: o Prophet! This Jew lady is saying that may Allah protect you from Dajjal and punishment in grave. So Holy Prophet stood up and prayed for protection against Dajjal and punishment in grave. And then said that as regards to fitnah of Dajjal, no Prophet has passed but that he warned his nation about this and I will warn you in such a way that none before me did that. Keep in mind that he is blind in one eye and Allah is not blind in one eye; and there is written between his two eyes KAFIR which everyone Momin can read. As regards to punishment in grave; that you will be test through me and you will be asked about me; if the one who dies is pious, angels will make him sit and there will be no fear or confusion for him, he will be asked which religion you followed, he would reply islam. He will be asked who is the man between. He would reply Mohammad asws who brought clear signs from Allah, we accepted that. Upon this a door of hell will be opened for him and he will be told that had you done kufr with your lord, this would have been your place; but since you have faith, so your place is different. Then door of heaven will be opened for him. so he would try to go there and angels will tell him to be at ease and then grave would be widened for him………………………

NARRATION 7:-

 حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ يَهُودِيَّةً دَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهَا، فَذَكَرَتْ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ، فَقَالَتْ لَهَا: أَعَاذَكِ اللهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ. فَسَأَلَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، فَقَالَ: ” نَعَمْ، عَذَابُ الْقَبْرِ حَقٌّ ” قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي صَلَاةً بَعْدُ إِلَّا تَعَوَّذَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

Ayesha narrates that once a Jew lady came and said that may allah protect you. When Holy Prophet asws came I told him about it, and asked: Is there punishment in grave as well? Holy Prophet asws replied: Punishment in grave is truth/haq. After that whenever I saw Holy Prophet asws offering prayers, he always asked for protection from punishment in grave

NARRATION 8

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: دَخَلَتْ عَلَيَّ يَهُودِيَّةٌ فَذَكَرَتْ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ

فَكَذَّبْتُهَا، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ؟ فَقَالَ: صَدَقَتْ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، إِنَّهُمْ لَيُعَذَّبُونَ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ حَتَّى تَسْمَعَ أَصْوَاتَهُمُ الْبَهَائِمُ

Waki’I – aymash – abi wail – masrooq – Ayesha
Ayesha narrates that a Jew lady came to me and said may Allah protect you from punishment in grave. This thing hit my heart so when Holy Prophet asws came I asked him if there is punishment in graves? He said: Yes by the  One who holds my life! there is punishment for people which is heard by animals

Let us analyze these narrations

If we grossly look over these narrations, we would find that there are differences in these

Like we do not know after going through these narrations as to what were the two ladies, that is, Ayesha and that Jew lady, doing before going into that controversy…… whether they were talking about the fact that if urine particles sprinkle over your dress, that causes punishment in grave as we see in narration 1….. or was it that Ayesha was nice to her, and that Jew lady told her this thing after she gave her something like we see in narration in narration 2 and 6………….or was it that she was testing the knowledge of Ayesha as we see in narration 3 and 4.

Similarly, the narrations clash in regards to the presence of Holy Prophet asws. All narrations say that he was not there except narrations 3 and 4.

But these minute details are not the major cause of concern. What worries more is the fact that whether Holy Prophet asws was aware of punishment in grave at the time when this incident took place. There is huge contradiction in that

Let us see that

As per the narrations of Jasra (narration 1) and Masrooq (narration 7 & 8), he was aware of it at that time. Rather if we see the narration of Zakwan (narration 6), we find that Holy Prophet asws gave even further details for that.

But on the other hand, when we see narrations of Saeed (narration 2) and Arwa (narration 3,4,5) he was not aware of it. There is though a small contradiction here too. Narration 3 and 4 of Arwa mention that Holy Prophet asws said that Jews would be tested whereas narration 5 negates it altogether, however, since narration of Arwa have been taken by Zuhri and then three different people mention it from him, that is, Shoaib (narration 3), Younas (narration 4) and Sufian (narration 5), it is probably from Sufian (or Yazeed narrating from him )who is different here; which may be because Sufian or Yazeed may have taken the saying of Holy Prophet asws that “only Jews would be tested” in the form of mocking, and may have replaced it by negation only.

I have given the authenticity of all chains from sunni scholars as it can be seen. And most of them have been having the standards of Sheikhain, i.e, Bukhari and Muslim. or atleast accepted sahih by greats like Albany, sheikh Shoabi ul arnawut or sheikh Hamza ahmad Zain

By and large, if these narrations are seen, it is obvious that narrators have conveyed the narration quite similarly as is evident in case of Masrooq, two people took narrations from him but these is no change in meaning in regards to knowledge of Holy Prophet asws about this issue. Similarly, we see the case of Arwa, and it is also almost the same except for some minor differences. so by and large, narrators taking narrations from Ayesha did pretty well job

But if we see in details, the way it has been expressed by different narrators, the details vary a lot. Like narration of Zakwan is quite extensive and gives the in-depth knowledge of Holy Prophet asws about the issue.

RESULT

So we are left with two options

Either it was Ayesha who was narrating the narrations differently at different time with this contradiction

Or

It was by the narrators, though they have been accepted trustworthy, but yet they changed the meaning of the narrations, though this would actually cast doubt on their trustworthiness

So, let us see a few more examples to come to the conclusion


2-PRAYER OF CHASHT (dhuhaa)

Let us analyze narrations of Ayesha in this regard

HOLY PROPHET asws NEVER OFFERED THIS PRAYER

NARRATION 1

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: وَأَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَتْ: “ وَاللهِ، مَا سَبَّحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، سُبْحَةَ الضُّحَى قَطُّ، وَإِنِّي لَأُسَبِّحُهَا “،  “

Ali bin ayash- shoaib – zuhri – urwa – Ayesha
She said that by god! Holy Prophet asws never offered chasht prayers, but I offer this prayer

الضُّحَى، وَإِنِّي لَأُسَبِّحُهَا ”

 حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَتْ تَقُولُ: مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسَبِّحُ سُبْحَةَ الضُّحَى، وَكَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ تُسَبِّحُهَا “

Ayesha states that Holy Prophet did not offer Chasht prayers, neither in Traveling nor when He was at home.

IMPORTANT POINT:- If you ponder upon the Narrations given, many of these (7 out of 9) Have Chains which have been authenticated by Sheikh Shoaib al-Arnawut on terms of Bukhari and Muslim. And This is one of the highest standards of Authentication of a chain

 حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْمُبَارَكُ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ، عَنْ مُعَاذَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: ” صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي بَيْتِي مِنَ الضُّحَى أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ “

ANALYSIS

If we actually see narrations of Ayesha in this regard, we see that there is not just confusion, rather contradictions in regards to whether holy prophet asws offered them or not, whether he offered it 2 rakat or he offered 4 or he offered 4 & increased it. Different narrations are telling us different facts.

Of course, those who have to defend Ayesha, would start pointing fingers on different Narrators, but that is exactly why I gave Authenticity given by great Scholars of AhluSunnah, so that those people have to  go against opinions of Their own greats like Sheikh Shoaib al-Arnawut etc.

3- SHOULD LIZARDS BE KILLED OR NOT?

There are two types of narrations there

NO ORDER FOR KILLING LIZARDS

 حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، قَالَ: وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي، قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، أَخْبَرَتْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِلْوَزَغِ: ” فُوَيْسِقٌ “، وَلَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ أَمَرَ بِقَتْلِهِ 

Ayesha says that Holy Prophet asws termed lizards hazardous, but I did not hear him ordering to kill them

ORDER FOR KILLING LIZARDS

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً دَخَلَتْ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَإِذَا رُمْحٌ مَنْصُوبٌ، فَقَالَتْ: مَا هَذَا الرُّمْحُ؟ فَقَالَتْ: نَقْتُلُ بِهِ الْأَوْزَاغَ، ثُمَّ حَدَّثَتْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ” أَنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَمَّا أُلْقِيَ فِي النَّارِ، جَعَلَتِ الدَّوَابُّ كُلُّهَا تُطْفِئُ عَنْهُ، إِلَّا الْوَزَغَ فَإِنَّهُ جَعَلَ يَنْفُخُهَا عَلَيْهِ “

A Lady says that once I went to Ayesha and saw a spear in her house, I asked her: o mother of Momineen!what do you do with this spear? She said I have kept it for lizards and I kill them with this, this is because Holy Prophet asws told us this hadeeth that when hazrat Ibrahim was put in fire, all animals were trying to extinguish that except for lizards who was airing that

Sheikh Shoaib says hadeeth is sahih and narrators are all narrators of sheikhain [43/24/25827]

Another narrations says

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ، أَنَّ نَافِعًا، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ” اقْتُلُوا الْوَزَغَ، فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَنْفُخُ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ النَّارَ ” قَالَ وَكَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ تَقْتُلُهُنَّ

Ayesha said that holy prophet asws ordered to kill lizards because they were blowing fire for hazrat Ibrahim asws; that is why Ayesha use to kill lizards

Sheikh Shoaib also mentions another Narration in His research upon Musnad, 41/81

وأخرجه عبد الرزاق في “مصنفه” (8392) عن معمر، عن الزهري عن عروة، عن عائشة أن النبي صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قال: “كانت الضفادع تطفئ النار عن إبراهيم، وكان الوزغ ينفخ فيه، فنهى عن قتل هذا، وأمر بقتل هذا”. وهذا إسناد صحيح على شرط الشيخين.

Ayesha narrates from Prophet asws that He said that Frog was trying to extinguish fire of Ibrahim, while lizard was blowing air into it. So He stopped from killing that, and ordered to kill that. This Chain is Authentic on terms of Sheikhain

Also there is another narration there in urdu version, vol 11, page 149 as well in which we see that Ayesha said that Holy Prophet asws ordered to kill lizards because they were blowing fire for hazrat Ibrahim, and for that Ayesha had that spear.  Keep in mind that Ibn Hibban included that Narration in His Sahih, 12/447, Sheikh Albany also termed it Sahih in His gradation of Sunan Ibn Maja, 2/1076, narration 3231. And We have already given authentic version which states that Holy Prophet ordered to kill.

A similar narration is there in urdu version, vol 11, page 215-216

ANALYSIS

So we see 3 narrations, authenticity is proven, in which Ayesha told us that there was no such order from holy prophet asws for killing lizards

And

On the other hand, we see her own action contradicted that, rather she killed them since she heard hadeeth of prophet asws

RESULT

Again we see the same issue and this means that either it was Ayesha who was forgetting and narrating in different forms or that it was narrators who were even changing the meanings, rather making them contradictory 

So let us see for sure if there was any problem with memory of Ayesha

WAS IT SO THAT AYESHA WOULD FORGET AHADEETH?

As We had mentioned in the start that We would give you explicit proof where She herself accepted about forgetting a Narration. And it is a Narration which had very serious consequences. That is why when she narrated this, She was asked where was this Narration, and she tells what she tells. Let us see the Narration .

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ (1) صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَقْبَلَتْ إِحْدَانَا عَلَى الْأُخْرَى، فَكَانَ مِنْ آخِرِ كَلَامٍ كَلَّمَهُ، أَنْ ضَرَبَ مَنْكِبَهُ (2) ، وَقَالَ: ” يَا عُثْمَانُ، إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَسَى أَنْ يُلْبِسَكَ قَمِيصًا، فَإِنْ أَرَادَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ عَلَى خَلْعِهِ، فَلَا تَخْلَعْهُ حَتَّى تَلْقَانِي، يَا عُثْمَانُ، إِنَّ اللهَ عَسَى أَنْ يُلْبِسَكَ قَمِيصًا، فَإِنْ أَرَادَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ عَلَى خَلْعِهِ، فَلَا تَخْلَعْهُ حَتَّى تَلْقَانِي ” ثَلَاثًا، فَقُلْتُ لَهَا: يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَأَيْنَ كَانَ هَذَا عَنْكِ؟ قَالَتْ: نَسِيتُهُ، وَاللهِ فَمَا ذَكَرْتُهُ. قَالَ: فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، فَلَمْ يَرْضَ بِالَّذِي أَخْبَرْتُهُ حَتَّى كَتَبَ إِلَى أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْ اكْتُبِي إِلَيَّ بِهِ، فَكَتَبَتْ إِلَيْهِ بِهِ كِتَابًا .

“Ayesha says that once Holy Prophet asws called for Uthman. When he came, Holy Prophet paid him attention, at the end of their discussion, Holy Prophet asws placed his hand on his shoulder and said: Othman! Soon allah will make you wear a shirt, so if hypocrites try to put it off, you do not put it off till you come and meet me. Ayesha says he repeated this thrice. Hazrat Noman said: I asked her: o Mother! Why did you not mention it before? She said: by God I had forgotten it, I did not remember it. He said that I told this to mawia but he did not satisfy with my saying only, he wrote a letter to Ayesha asking her that write it for me so Ayesha wrote that hadeeth in a letter and sent that to mawia”

{molvi zafar iqbal says narration is sahih as per ibn haban and Albany; and hasan ghareeb as per tirmidhi}

Sheikh Shoaib says Chain is Authentic and Narrators are all Trustworthy  and that of sahih except walid bin suliman from whom narrated Nisai and ibn Maja and he is thiqa/Trustworthy [41/113/24566]

Similar narration is present in urdu version, vol 11, page 320; and narration has been termed Hasan by sheikh Shoaib in his version, vol 42, page 84, narration 25162.

CONCLUSION

This narration clarifies for sure that Ayesha would forget entire narrations what to talk of bits and pieces of that………………..
