Allah says in verse of purification

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا

Allah only desires to keep away the AL-RIJIS from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying.

so, let us see in which senses, Allah has used this word in Quran. and what scholars of ahlusunnah have to say in this regard

VERSE 1:-

Allah says in Quran:-

{ فَمَن يُرِدِ ٱللَّهُ أَن يَهْدِيَهُ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلإِسْلَٰمِ وَمَن يُرِدْ أَن يُضِلَّهُ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُ ضَيِّقاً حَرَجاً كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِي ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَذٰلِكَ يَجْعَلُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلرِّجْسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ }

Therefore (for) whomsoever Allah intends that He would guide him aright, He expands his breast for Islam, and (for) whomsoever He intends that He should cause him to err, He makes his breast strait and narrowas though he were ascending upwards;thus does Allah lay uncleanness (Rijis) on those who do not believe.
Quran [6:125]

let us see tafsir of this verse

ibn Kather writes in his tafsir

(Thus Allah puts the Rijis (wrath) on those who believe not.) “Allah says that just as He makes the heart of whomever He decides to misguide, closed and constricted, He also appoints Shaytan for him and for his likes, those who refused to believe in Allah and His Messenger. Consequently, Shaytan lures and hinders them from the path of Allah.”`Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said that, Rijis, refers to Shaytan, while Mujahid said that it refers to all that does not contain goodness. `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said that, Rijis, means, `torment’.

Sayooti writes in his tafsir
“abd ibn hameed, ibn abi sheebah, ibn munzir, ibn abi hatim and abu-ul-sheikh wrote that hazrat mujahid said that “rijis” means uncleanliness in which there is not moral or good.”
[tafsir Dur-e-Manthur, urdu version, vol 3, page 149]

interestingly, if you see urdu version of tafsir ibn Kather, you will see that there is some sort of tehreef in this regard. and they just wrote

“ibn Abbas said that “Rijis” means Satan, anything in which there is no good, and punishment.”
[tafsir ibn kather, urdu version, vol 2, page 294]

and in my course of study, i found that at many times, urdu version has parts missing in regards to translation of “al-Rijis”. but since this is not my topic of discussion, i will use online version due to this reason

VERSE NO. 2:-

{ قَالَ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌ أَتُجَٰدِلُونَنِي فِيۤ أَسْمَآءٍ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنْتُمْ وَآبَآؤكُمُ مَّا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَانٍ فَٱنْتَظِرُوۤاْ إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِّنَ ٱلْمُنْتَظِرِينَ }

He said:Indeed uncleanness (Rijis) and wrath from your Lord have lighted upon you; what! do you dispute with me about names which you and your fathers have given? Allah has not sent any authority for them; wait then, I too with you will be of those who wait.
Quran [7:71]

ibn Kather writes in his tafsir

{ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌ } أي: قد وجب عليكم بمقالتكم هذه من ربكم رجس، قيل: هو مقلوب من رجز. وعن ابن عباس: معناه سخط وغضب.

(“Rijis and wrath have already fallen on you from your Lord.”) you deserve `Rijis’ from your Lord because of what you said. Ibn `Abbas said that, `Rijis’, means scorn and anger.

Sayooti writes in his tafsir

“Imam ibn abi Hatim writes in tafsir of this verse that hazrat ibn Zaid said that punishment of allah came on them. Wherever the word “Rijis” comes in quran, it means “punishment”
Imam Tasti narrates this saying of ibn Abbas that when Nafi’I bin Azraq asked him about “Rijis and punishment”; he replied: Rijis means curse and “ghadab” means punishment. He asked: do arabs know of this meaning? He replied: yes, have you not heard poets saying

When there are no rains in nadj
There is rijis and adhab/punishment on them

[tafsir Dur-e-manthur, urdu version, vol 3, page 308]

VERSE NO. 3:-

{ يَٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلأَنصَابُ وَٱلأَزْلاَمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَانِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ }

O you who believe!intoxicants and games of chance and (sacrificing to) stones set up and (dividing by) arrows are only an uncleanness (Rijis), the Shaitan’s work; shun it therefore that you may be successful.
Quran [5:90]

and ibn Kather writes for this verse

وقوله تعالى: { رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ } قال علي بن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس: أي: سخط من عمل الشيطان. وقال سعيد بن جبير: إثم. وقال زيد بن أسلم: أي: شر من عمل الشيطان

(A Rijis of Shaytan’s handiwork) meaning, abomination of Shaytan’s handiwork, according to`Ali bin Abi Talhah who reported it from Ibn `Abbas. Sa`id bin Jubayr said that Rijis means `sin’ while Zayd bin Aslam said; “An evil handiwork of Shaytan.”

VERSE NO. 4

{ وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُمْ مَّن يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَـٰذِهِ إِيمَاناً فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَاناً وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ } * { وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْساً إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُواْ وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ }

And whenever a chapter is revealed, there are some of them who say: Which of you has it strengthened in faith? Then as for those who believe, it strengthens them in faith and they rejoice.And as for those in whose hearts is a disease, it adds uncleanness (Rijis) to their uncleanness and they die while they are unbelievers.
Quran [9:124-125]

ibn Kather writes for this verse

{ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ } أي: زادتهم شكاً إلى شكهم، وريباً إلى ريبهم؛

(But as for those in whose hearts is a disease, it will add Rijis to their Rijis.) the Surahincreases them in doubt, and brings more suspicion on top of the doubts and suspicion that they had before.

VERSE NO. 5

And it is not for a soul to believe except by Allah’s permission; and He casts uncleanness on those who will not understand.
Quran [10:100]

ibn Kather writes in his tafsir

{ وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَن تُؤْمِنَ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَجْعَلُ ٱلرِّجْسَ } وهو الخبال والضلال { عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لاَ يَعْقِلُونَ } أي: حجج الله وأدلته، وهو العادل في كل ذلك؛ في هداية من هدى، وإضلال من ضل.

(It is not for any person to believe, except by the leave of Allah, and He will put the Rijis)That is, disorder and misguidance (upon those who do not reason) meaning, Allah’s proofs and evidences, and He is the Just in all matters, guiding whom He wills to guide, and leading whom He wills astray.

And he further writes

[tafsir Dur-e-manthur, urdu version, vol 3, page 966]

VERSE NO. 6:-

{ ذٰلِكَ وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ حُرُمَاتِ ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّهُ عِندَ رَبِّهِ وَأُحِلَّتْ لَكُمُ ٱلأَنْعَامُ إِلاَّ مَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَٱجْتَنِبُواْ ٱلرِّجْسَ مِنَ ٱلأَوْثَانِ وَٱجْتَنِبُواْ قَوْلَ ٱلزُّورِ }

That (shall be so); and whoever respects the sacred ordinances of Allah, it is better for him with his Lord; and the cattle are made lawful for you, except that which is recited to you,therefore avoid the uncleanness of the idols and avoid false words,
Quran [22:30]

and ibn Kather writes for this verse

{ فَٱجْتَنِبُواْ ٱلرِّجْسَ مِنَ ٱلأَوْثَـٰنِ وَٱجْتَنِبُواْ قَوْلَ ٱلزُّورِ } (من) ههنا لبيان الجنس، أي: اجتنبوا الرجس الذي هو الأوثان،

So shun the Rijis of the idols, and shun false speech.) From this it is clear what Ar-Rijis means, i.e., avoid the abomination, which means idols.

CONCLUSION

so, let us see in what scholars of ahlusunnah have to say about al-Rijis in verse of purification

We find in tafsir Tibri

(إنما يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل البيت) يقول: إنما يريد الله ليذهب عنكم السوء والفحشاء يا أهل بيت محمد, ويطهركم من الدنس الذي يكون في أهل معاصي الله تطهيرا.

Verily, Allah only wishes to keep off from you all abomination, O Ahl al-Bayt (Qur’an 33:33)

The verse is saying: Verily Allah only wishes to keep off from you all evil and abominable deeds, O Ahl al-Bayt of Muhammad, and to purify you completely of all impurity associated with those who disobey Allah.

This is Ibn Jurir’s own interpretation. Then, he goes on:

Bishr – Yazid – Sa’eed – Qatadah, who said: Verily, Allah only wishes to keep off from you all abomination, O Ahl al-Bayt (Qur’an 33:33). They are Ahl al-Bayt. Allah purified them from evil deeds and chose them specially for His Mercy.

Yunus – Ibn Wahb – Ibn Zayd, who said: Verily, Allah only wishes to keep off from you all abomination, O Ahl al-Bayt (Qur’an 33:33). He said: Al-Rijis here means Shaytan. Another meaning of al-Rijis is Shirk.

and Sayooti writes in his tafsir

ibn Jurair and ibn abi Hatim wrote from qatada regarding this verse that he said: it is Ahlulbait who have been purified by Allah from sin, and specified his mercy/blessing with them

and Dhahak bin Mazahim wrote from holy prophet asws that he said: we are Ahlubait who have been purified by allah, from the tree (lineage) of prophethood, and place of risalat and house to angels, and house of mercy/blessings and mine of knowledge

and he also wrote that

فأنا وأهل بيتي مطهرون من الذنوب “.

i and my ahlubait are free of sins
