let me share authentic narrations in this regard

HADEETH NO. 1

we find this narration

( أخبرنا ) محمد بن علي بن هبة الواقدي ( 2 ) ، قال : أخبرنا معاذ بن خالد ( 3 ) ، قال : اخبرنا الحسين بن واقد ( 4 ) ، عن عبد الله بن بريدة ( 5 ) قال : سمعت ابي بريدة ( 6 ) يقول : حاصرنا خيبر فأخذ الراية أبو بكر ولم يفتح له ، فأخذه من الغد عمر فانصرف ولم يفتح له ، وأصاب الناس شدة وجهد ،
فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : إنى دافع لوائى غدا إلى رجل يحب الله ورسوله ويحبه الله ورسوله لا يرجع حتى يفتح له . وبتنا طيبة أنفسنا أن الفتح غدا ، فلما أصبح رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم

صلى الغداة ، ثم جاء قائما ورمى اللواء والناس على أقصافهم ، فما منا إنسان له منزلة عند الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم إلا وهو يرجو أن يكون صاحب اللواء ، فدعا علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه وهو أرمد فتفل ومسح في عينيه ، فدفع إليه اللواء وفتح عليه . قالوا : أخبرنا ممن تطاول بها

Abdullah bin buraida quotes from his father that when we surrounded khaibar, so abu bakr took the flag, but he could not win; then umar took the next day, and people faced many problems and could not win; so prophet asws said that tomorrow I will give the flag to one who loves allah and his prophet and is beloved of allah and his prophet; and he will not return till he wins; so we had confidence that tomorrow we will win; so when prophet offered morning prayer; then he stood; and lifted the flag; and people were in rows; whosoever had some importance near prophet asws, he was expecting that he will hold it; thenn he called ali though he had conjunctivitis; so he placed some saliva and then gave him the flag; and allah gave victory on his hand; and I was one of those who expected flag.

HADEETH NO. 2

let us see this narration

( أخبرنا ) محمد بن بشار بن دار البصري ( 2 ) ، اخبرنا محمد بن جعفر ( 3 ) ، قال : حدثنا عوف ( 4 ) ، عن ميمون ( 5 ) ، عن أبي عبد الله عبد السلام ( 6 ) : ان عبد الله بن بريدة حدثه عن بريدة الاسلمي ، قال : لما كان يوم خيبر نزل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بحصن أهل خيبر ، أعطى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اللواء عمر ، فنهض فيه من نهض

من الناس فلقوا أهل خيبر ، فانكشف عمر واصحابه فرجعوا إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : لاعطين اللواء رجلا يحب الله ورسوله ويحبه الله ورسوله .
فلما كان من الغد تصادر أبو بكر وعمر ، فدعا عليا وهو أرمد فتفل في عينيه ونهض معه من الناس من نهض فلقي اهل خيبر ، فإذا مرحب يرتجز : قد علمت خيبر اني مرحب * شاكى السلاح بطل مجرب إذا الليوث أقبلت تلهب * أطعن احيانا وحينا أضرب ( 1 ) فاختلف هو وعلي ضربتين فضربه على هامته ، حتى مضى السيف منها منتهى رأسه ، وسمع اهل العسكر صوت ضربته ، فما تتام آخر الناس مع علي حتى فتح لاولهم ( 2 ) .

buraida says that when prophet reached khaiber; and gave flag to umar so he went along with few men but when he fought, it became clear to him, and he returned to prophet; at that time prophet said

“I will give the flag to the one who loves allah and his prophet and is beloved of allah and his prophet”

when it got morning, abu baker and umar stepped forward, but prophet called for ali, and he had conjunctivitis; prophet placed his saliva in his eyes, and gave him flag; and those who wished to be with him also accompanied; and he faced people of khaiber;

marhab came reciting that

“khaiber knows I am marhab

armed, brave and experienced

when lions come ahead they vanish

sometime I injure, sometime kill

then there was figth and just two hits, when ali hit him such that it sword passed through head and his brain become apparent; and all army heard that voice; and people had not yet reached him when allah gave victory to the first ones (that is, the first rows got the victory)

baloshi did not accept authenticity though, but as qari faizi says, we had seen an authentic shahid/evidence for this

sheikh shoaib said about the hadeeth’s authenticity

hadeeth is sahih, though chain is weak due to maimon

3- FADAIL US SAHABA

interestingly, the narration which we are talking about comes in musnad ahmad, as i told you, and i had given you the link
let me show you the start of this narration
we find in musnad

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، وَرَوْحٌ , الْمَعْنَى , قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونٍ أَبي عَبدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ رَوْحٌ : الْكُرْدِيُّ , عَنْ عَبدِ اللَّهِ بنِ برَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبيهِ برَيْدَةَ
الْأَسْلَمِيِّ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بحِصْنِ أَهْلِ خَيْبرَ ، أَعْطَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اللِّوَاءَ عُمَرَ بنَ الْخَطَّاب ، وَنَهَضَ مَعَهُ مَنْ نَهَضَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ، فَلَقُوا أَهْلَ خَيْبرَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ” لَأُعْطِيَنَّ اللِّوَاءَ غَدًا رَجُلًا يُحِب اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ، وَيُحِبهُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ”

(حديث مرفوع) قثنا رَوْحٌ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ , قَالا : نا عَوْفٌ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونٍ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ رَوْحٌ الْكُرْدِيُّ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ بُرَيْدَةَ الأَسْلَمِيِّ ، أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمَّا نَزَلَ بِحَضْرَةِ أَهْلِ خَيْبَرَ قَالَ : ” لأُعْطِيَنَّ الرَّايَةَ غَدًا رَجُلا يُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ، وَيُحِبُّهُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ” ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْغَدُ دَعَا عَلِيًّا ، وَهُوَ أَرْمَدُ ، فَتَفَلَ فِي عَيْنَيْهِ ، وَأَعْطَاهُ اللِّوَاءَ ، وَنَهَضَ مَعَهُ النَّاسُ فَلَقُوا أَهْلَ خَيْبَرَ ، فَإِذَا مَرْحَبٌ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ يَرْتَجِزُ ، وَإِذَا هُوَ يَقُولُ : ” قَدْ عَلِمَتْ خَيْبَرُ أَنِّي مَرْحَبُ شَاكِي السِّلاحَ بَطَلٌ مُجَرَّبُ إِذَا اللُّيُوثُ أَقْبَلَتْ تَلَهَّبُ أَطْعَنُ أَحْيَانًا وَحِينًا أَضْرِبُ فَاخْتَلَفَ هُوَ وَعَلِيٌّ ضَرْبَتَيْنِ ، فَضَرَبَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ حَتَّى عَضَّ السَّيْفُ بِأَضْرَاسِهِ ، وَسَمِعَ أَهْلُ الْعَسْكَرِ صَوْتَ ضَرْبَتِهِ ، قَالَ : فَمَا تَتَامَّ آخِرُ النَّاسِ حَتَّى فُتِحَ لأَوَّلِهِمْ ” ، قَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ : آخِرُ النَّاسِ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ فَفُتِحَ لَهُ وَلَهُمْ .

same sanad except for the difference that in musnad
he named mohammad bin jafar first and then he said i also took it from ruh

and in fadail us sahaba, he reversed this order

regarding authenticity of narraiton
sheikh wasi ullah says

sanad is daif due to maimoon, but hadeeth is sahih

keep in mind that this narration with just this part that holy prophet asws gave flag to umar does come in other references

ibn saad mentions in his tabaqat

(حديث مرفوع) قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَوْفٌ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونٍ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ بُرَيْدَةَ الأَسْلَمِيِّ ، قَالَ : ” لَمَّا كَانَ حَيْثُ نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحَضْرَةِ أَهْلِ خَيْبَرَ ، أَعْطَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اللِّوَاءَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ” .

this is the same sanad like that of ahmad, except that here we do not see mohammad bin jafar,

ibn sheba wrote in tareekh

(حديث مرفوع) قال : أَخْبَرَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، قال : أَخْبَرَنَا عَوْفٌ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونٍ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ بُرَيْدَةَ الأَسْلَمِيِّ ، قال : ” لَمَّا كَانَ حَيْثُ نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحَضْرَةِ أَهْلِ خَيْبَرَ ، أَعْطَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اللِّوَاءَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ” .


CONCLUSION

we have seen narrations which clarify that umar in deed took the flag
whether he took it by himself, as we see in the first narration which is authentic one
or was given by prophet asws, as it comes in daif one
this is not the topic which i wish to cover in this article

though the point is simple that he took it by himself since we know that first narration is authentic, and we also know that umar expressed his desire to get the flag when it was given to amir ul momineen
