You may have heard this argument being given by Sunnis that is it possible that Holy Prophet asws had appointed someone and people had objected or criticized to it? Let us see the answer to this with this narration from Fadail us Sahaba,

قثنا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ أُسَامَةَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ ، قَالَ : فَطَعَنَ النَّاسُ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ ، فَقَالَ : ” إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ ، فَقَدْ طَعَنْتُمْ فِي إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لِلإِمَارَةِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ لِمَنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ ، وَإِنَّ ابْنَهُ هَذَا لِمَنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ بَعْدَهُ ”

Ibn Umar says that when Holy Prophet asws appointed Usama on people, people criticized it, so He said: You are criticising his leadership, no doubt you criticized leadership of his father as well, By God! he was deserving of that, and the most beloved of me in people, and his son is the most beloved of me after him

This narration with the same chain comes in Musnad Ahmad, urdu version, 3/69. Translator of the book, Zafar Iqbal has said that it is Sahih as per Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Haban and Tirmidhi termed it Hasan Sahih.

This narration comes in Bukhari with 5 Chains 

Number 1:-

حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا

Number 2:- 

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا

Number 3:-

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا

Number 4:-

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ , حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ

Muslim mentions it with following chains

Number 1

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ يَحْيَي ، وَيَحْيَي بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ ، وَابْنُ حُجْرٍ ، قَالَ يَحْيَي بْنُ يَحْيَي : أَخْبَرَنَا ، وقَالَ الْآخَرُونَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ يَعْنُونَ ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ،

Number 2

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ،


Ibn Haban mentions it with two chains

Number 1

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَلادٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

Number 2

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّامِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْمَقَابِرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ

CONCLUSION

Now, we see that Holy Prophet asws appointed leaders twice, and people objected to it, busting the myth that how it is possible that sahaba would object; Now we have seen that sahaba had objected even in lifetime of Holy Prophet asws
more importantly, Holy Prophet criticized their choice and said that the ones selected by Him were worthy of being leaders
so, this means that the choice of people was defective on two occasions
