Let us speak of a Sahabi, named Mu’tab bin Qashir

Let us see this narration from Tafsir ibn Kathir

Zubair says that I had seen when we were with Holy Prophet asws when we were intensely horrified, Allah sent sleep on us. And there was no man in us except that his head was going to his chest; by God! I heard in that state Mu’tab bin Qashir who said If we had any say in this regard, we would not have been killed here, and saved ourself. And regarding that, Allah revealed the verse. Narrated by Ibn Abi Hatim

[Tafsir ibn Kathir, tafsir of verse 3/154]

Ibn Abi Hatim has included this narration in his Tafsir as mentioned

{Tafsir ibn abi Hatim, vol 3, page 795, narration 4373}

Regarding authenticity of the narration, first of all, it is narrated in Tafsir ibn abi Hatim;

secondly, it has been mentioned in Umda tu Tafasir min Tafsir ibn Kathir, vol 1, page 428;
Shiekh Ahmad Shakir says about the sanad in the footnotes

SAHIH SANAD

Thirdly, Hafiz abu Tahir Zubair Ali Zai says in his urdu version of Tafsir Ibn kathir, 1/577, footnote 2

this chain is hasan

There is another narration as well in this regard

Ibn Abi Hatim notes

Ibn Abbas said that it was Mu’tab who said on the day of Uhud that if we had any say in this regard, we would not have died. upon this saying, Allah revealed the verse [ and (there was) another party whom their own souls had rendered anxious; they entertained about Allah thoughts of ignorance]

[Tafsir ibn abi Hatim, vol 3, page 794; narration 4366]

Now, let us see the verse of Surat Aal e Imran, verse 154

Then after sorrow He sent down security upon you, a calm coming upon a party of you, and (there was) another party whom their own souls had rendered anxious; they entertained about Allah thoughts of ignorance quite unjustly, saying: We have no hand in the affair. Say: Surely the affair is wholly (in the hands) of Allah. They conceal within their souls what they would not reveal to you. They say: Had we any hand in the affair, we would not have been slain here. Say: Had you remained in your houses, those for whom slaughter was ordained would certainly have gone forth to the places where they would be slain, and that Allah might test what was in your breasts and that He might purge what was in your hearts; and Allah knows what is in the breasts.

the verse says

the sahabi said

I know that nawasib must be dancing around in happiness that the words of a sahabi have become part of Quran

but keep in mind that the verse gives the characteristics of those who said so, of course, not the name

and we have seen an authentic narration which gave the name

Let us see what other sahaba had to say about the groups on that day

We find that Sheikh Ahmad Shakir included in his Umda tu Tafasir min Hafiz ibn Kathir , a narration from Tafsir ibn Kathir that

Abu talha said that we got drowsy on the day of Uhud, and i was in those who got drowsy on that day. so my sword fell of my hand. i would pick it and it would fall. and then there was the group of Monafiqeen, there was none in them but that they were cowards and parting away from truth

[online link for tafisr ibn kathir]

[Umda tu tafasir min Hafiz ibn Kathir, 1/428]

and if we ponder on the verse, it also tells us that there were in deed two parties

1- He sent down security upon you, a calm coming upon a party of you

2- and (there was) another party whom their own souls had rendered anxious; they entertained about Allah thoughts of ignorance quite unjustly

so, it actually tells us that there were two groups on that day, and the other group were having ill thoughts

NOW

ibn Hajar writes for Mu’tab

He is talked about in those who took testimony in uqba, and it is said that he was hypocrite and it was he who said on the day of uhud that had we any say in this regard, we would not have been killed; and it is said that he repented; and ibn ishaq said he fought in badr

[al Asaba; online link]

Of course, we have seen that he was the one who said something which became part of Quran
But We have yet to see any narration where he had repented …………………………

But one thing is for sure, His words became part of Quran forever
