This post is inspired from the work of brother Asadullah Al Ghalib 

 

Ma’atab bin Qasheer is one of the sahaba of Holy Prophet asws. We find about him in Usd ul Ghaba

مُعَتِّب بن قُشَيْر. وقيل: مُعَتِّب بن بَشِير بن مُليل بن زيد بن العطَّاف بن ضبيعة بن زيد بن مالك بن عوف بن عمرو بن عوف بن مالك بن الأَوس الأَنصاري الأَوسي. 
شهد العقبة، وبدرًا، وأُحدًا. 
أَخبرنا عُبَيد اللّه بن أَحمد بإِسناده عن يونس، عن ابن إِسحاق، فيمن شهد بدرًا من الأَنصار. من بني ضبيعة بن زيد: “ومعتب بن فلان بن مُليل، لا عقب له”.

Ma’atab bin Qasheer…………..He was present in A’qba, Badr and Uhud. Ubaid ullah bin Ahmad narrates from his chain from Ibn Ishaq that he was present in Badr and  was from Ansaar, from tribe of Bani Dhabiya…..He had no progeny

There are many occasions when we see that He has been counted as a hypocrite. Let us see these from Sunni books

1st OCCASION

.

He has this honour that His words became part of Quran, and I have talked about that before


قال ابن إِسحاق: فحدثني يحيى بن عباد بن عبد الله بن الزبير، عن أبيه، عن عبد الله بن الزبير، قال: قال الزبير: لقد رأيتني مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حين اشتد الخوف علينا، أرسل الله علينا النوم، فما منا من رجل إلا ذقنه في صدره، قال: فو الله إني لأسمع قول معتب ابن قشير،
ما أسمعه إلا كالحلم يقول: { لو كان لنا من الأَمر شيء ما قتلنا ههنا } ، فحفظتها منه، وفي ذلك أنزل الله: { يَقُولُونَ لَوْ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ ٱلأَمْرِ شَىْءٌ مَّا قُتِلْنَا هَـٰهُنَا } لقول معتب، رواه ابن أبي حاتم

Zubair says that I had seen when we were with Holy Prophet asws when we were intensely horrified, Allah sent sleep on us. And there was no man in us except that his head was going to his chest; by God! I heard in that state Mu’tab bin Qashir who said If we had any say in this regard, we would not have been killed here, and saved ourself. And regarding that, Allah revealed the verse. Now

If we see urdu version of Tafsir Ibn Kather, published by Maktba Islami, 2009, Pakistan, We find that they write before this narration

فی الواقع منافقوں کا یہی حال ھے کہ جہاں ذرا نیچا پانسہ دیکھا اور نا امیدی کی گھنگور گھٹاوں نے انہیں گھیر لیا- بر خلاف ان کے ایماندار بد سے بدتر حالت میں بھی اللہ سے نیک گمان رھتا ھے۔ ان کے دلوں کے خیالات یہ تھے کہ اگر ھمارا کچھ بھی بس چلتا، تو آج کی موت سے بچ رھتے اور چپکے چپکے یوں کہتے بھی تھے۔ حضرت زبیر کا بیان ھے کہ ۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔

And in reality, this is what is the state of hypocrites, whenever they find themselves in hot water, hopelessness surrounds them. On the contrary, those who have faith, they always have good hopes. They (hypocrites) were thinking that had we got any power this day, we would have saved ourselves from death, and they were even saying this in low tones. Hazrat Zubair narrates……

So, we see that this saying was attributed to that of Hypocrites; and it was shown as traits of hypocrites as well. Please refer to my previous post on this issue

2nd OCCASION

.

But this is not the only time when Mutab has been mentioned as Hypocrite. We rather find another incident as well. We find in Fath-ul-Bari, Ibn Ishaq saying

 سعد بن معاذ وسعد بن عبادة وقالا : كنا نحن وهم على الشرك لا يطمعون منا في شيء من ذلك ، فكيف نفعله بعد أن أكرمنا الله عز وجل بالإسلام وأعزنا بك ؟ نعطيهم أموالنا ، ما لنا بهذا من حاجة ، ولا نعطيهم إلا السيف . فاشتد بالمسلمين الحصار ، حتى تكلم معتب بن قشير وأوس بن قيظي وغيرهما من المنافقين بالنفاق

وأنزل الله تعالى : وإذ يقول المنافقون والذين في قلوبهم مرض ما وعدنا الله ورسوله إلا غرورا الآيات

Saad bin Muadh and Saad bin Ibada said: When we and they were Mushriks, they did not desire anything of us, how can they do so now that Allah has honoured us with Islam, and given us respect with that. We will give them money/possession but we will not give them our swords (meaning that they will not control our swords, and we will fight them). And muslim got in problems due to surrounding by enemy, till Ma’atab bin Qasheer and aus bin Qaizi etc from hypocrites spoke with hypocrisy. And Allah revealed: When Hypocrites said and those who had problem in their hearts……

In urdu translation of Fath ul Bari, by the name of Faiz ul Bari, We find them writing these words

یہاں تک کے کلام کیا معتب وغیرہ منافقوں نے ساتھ نفاق کے

till the time that Ma’tab etc from Hypocrites spoke with hypocrisy

3rd OCCASION 

.

There is a narration in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, I will be quoting it from Online translation of Muslim

Abdullah reported: On the day of Hunain, the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) showed preference (to some) People in the distribution of the spoils. He bestowed on Aqra’ b. Habis one hundred camels, and bestowed an equal (number) upon ‘Uyaina, and bestowed on people among the elites of Arabia, and preferred them) (to others) on that day, in the distribution (of spoils). Upon this a person said: By Allaah, neither justice has been done In this distribution (of spoils), nor has the pleasure of Allaah been sought in it. I (the Narrator ) said: By Allaah, I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) about it. so I came to him and informed him about what he had said. – The colour of his (the Prophet’s) face changed red like blood and he then said: Who would do justice, if Allaah and His Messenger do not do justice? He further said: May Allaah have mercy upon Moses; he was tormented more than this, but he showed patience. I said: Never would I convey him (the Prophet) after this (unpleasant) narration

Ibn Hajar mentions regarding the name of this person, as to who it was who doubted Holy Prophet’s (asws) justice…..Ibn Hajar mentions in Fath-ul-Bari

حديث بن مسعود في قول الرجل والله إن هذه لقسمة ما عدل فيها ذكر الواقدي أن هذا القائل هو معتب بن قشير

Narration of Ibn Masood regarind saying of man that By God! justice has not been done in this distribution, Waqadi said that this person was Ma’atab bin Qasheer

Ibn Hajar mentions on 1/297 of the same book

 

 حديث عبد الله بن مسعود قسم النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم قسما فقال رجل إن هذه لقسمة ما أريد بها وجه الله تعالى تقدم أنه معتب بن قشير

And narration of Abdullah bin Masood that Prophet asws distributed and man said that, it has passed before that it was Ma’atab bin Qasheer

 

And again, he mentioned on 1/308

 

حديث بن مسعود لما قسم النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم غنائم حنين قال رجل من الأنصار هو معتب بن قشير كما تقدم

Narration of Abdullah bin Masood that When Prophet asws distributed war booty of Hunain, a man from Ansaar said, and he was Ma’atab bin Qasheer

CONCLUSION 

.

We see that Ma’atab bin Qasheer was one of those whose words became part of Quran, when he wished that he had some say at the time of battle, so that He could have saved his life

Then we see that Ibn Ishaq counted him “in Munafiqeen”

And in the last we see, that the person who doubted justice of Holy Prophet asws, and angered him, He is suspected of being the one.
