Taj ud Deen Subki [1] writes about Dhabi

He said about him [2]

وَكَانَ شَيخنَا وَالْحق أَحَق مَا قيل والصدق أولى مَا آثره ذُو السَّبِيل شَدِيد الْميل إِلَى آراء الْحَنَابِلَة كثير الإزراء بِأَهْل السّنة الَّذين إِذا حظروا كَانَ أَبُو الْحسن الْأَشْعَرِيّ فيهم مقدم الْقَافِلَة فَلذَلِك لَا ينصفهم فِي التراجم وَلَا يصفهم بِخَير إِلَّا وَقد رغم مِنْهُ أنف الراغم صنف التَّارِيخ الْكَبِير وَمَا أحْسنه لَوْلَا تعصب فِيهِ

He was our Sheikh, and truth demands what is said and truth shows its effects that He was very inclined to Hanbli opinions, and teased Ahlusunnah of his era a lot. And Abu Hasan al Ashari was his target as he was leading their path. And He did not do justice in his opinions about him, and did not mention them with good words except when he was forced. And he wrote a book like Tareekh ul Kabeer, what a book, I wish there was no bias in him

He further said [3]

وأمثلة هَذَا تكْثر وَهَذَا شَيخنَا الذَّهَبِيّ رَحمَه اللَّه من هَذَا الْقَبِيل لَهُ علم وديانة وَعِنْده عَلَى أهل السّنة تحمل مفرط فَلَا يجوز أَن يعْتَمد عَلَيْهِ

And similar to this was the case of our Sheikh Dhabi, he had knowledge and honesty, but he attacked Ahlusunnah a lot, and it is not allowed to trust him in this

He further said on same page

ونقلت من خطّ الْحَافِظ صَلَاح الدّين خَلِيل بن كيكلدى العلائي رَحمَه اللَّه مَا نَصه الشَّيْخ الْحَافِظ شمس الدّين الذَّهَبِيّ لَا أَشك فِي دينه وورعه وتحريه فِيمَا يَقُوله النَّاس وَلكنه غلب عَلَيْهِ مَذْهَب الْإِثْبَات ومنافرة التَّأْوِيل والغفلة عَن التَّنْزِيه حَتَّى أثر ذَلِك فِي طبعه انحرافا شَدِيدا عَن أهل التَّنْزِيه وميلا قَوِيا إِلَى أهل الْإِثْبَات فَإِذا ترْجم وَاحِدًا مِنْهُم يطنب فِي وَصفه بِجَمِيعِ مَا قِيلَ فِيهِ من المحاسن ويبالغ فِي وَصفه ويتغافل عَن غلطاته ويتأول لَهُ مَا أمكن وَإِذا ذكر أحدا من الطّرف الآخر كإمام الْحَرَمَيْنِ وَالْغَزالِيّ وَنَحْوهمَا لَا يُبَالغ فِي وَصفه وَيكثر من قَول من طعن فِيهِ وَيُعِيد ذَلِك ويبديه ويعتقده دينا وَهُوَ لَا يشْعر ويعرض عَن محاسنهم الطافحة فَلَا يستوعبها وَإِذا ظفر لأحد مِنْهُم بغلطة ذكرهَا وَكَذَلِكَ فعله فِي أهل عصرنا إِذا لم يقدر عَلَى أحد مِنْهُم بتصريح يَقُول فِي تَرْجَمته وَالله يصلحه وَنَحْو ذَلِك وَسَببه الْمُخَالفَة فِي العقائد

And I am quoting from writing of Hafiz Salah ud Deen Khalil who said about Dhabi that there is no doubt in his religion and piety and respect as people say but he was dominated by his religion, and he hated explanation/taweel, and he was ignorant of (?)tanzih to the extent that he started hating those people of Tanzih, and he was more inclined to people of Athbaat ( أهل الْإِثْبَات); and so when he would write about these people, he would write that in detail and praise him a lot, and exaggerate in his qualities and ignore his mistakes, and explain those to maximum. But when he would talk about other group, like Imam of Harmain and Ghazali and others like them, he would not tell about their qualities and talk more about those who criticized them and would write them again, and he would ignore their qualities even if evident………………..

He further said

وَالْحَال فِي حق شَيخنَا الذَّهَبِيّ أَزِيد مِمَّا وصف وَهُوَ شَيخنَا ومعلمنا غير أَن الْحق أَحَق أَن يتبع وَقد وصل من التعصب المفرط إِلَى حد يسخر مِنْهُ
وَأَنا أخْشَى عَلَيْهِ يَوْم الْقِيَامَة من غَالب عُلَمَاء الْمُسلمين وأئمتهم الَّذين حملُوا لنا الشَّرِيعَة النَّبَوِيَّة فَإِن غالبهم أشاعرة وَهُوَ إِذا وَقع بأشعري لَا يبقي وَلَا يذر
وَالَّذِي أعتقده أَنهم خصماؤه يَوْم الْقِيَامَة عِنْد

من لَعَلَّ أَدْنَاهُم عِنْده أوجه مِنْهُ فَالله الْمَسْئُول أَن يُخَفف عَنهُ وَأَن يلهمهم الْعَفو عَنهُ وَأَن يشفعهم فِيهِ

And the status in respect of our Sheikh Dhabi is more that what is mentioned. He is our Teacher and Sheikh, but truth deserves more to be followed. He had reached heights in Bias to the extent that makes fun of him. 

and I am afraid of the day of Qayamat when most of the scholars of Muslim and their Imams who gave teachings of Holy Prophet asws to us, and most of them were Ashaaris……………I believe that they would plead on that day of Qayamat even minor scholar of them, who was greater status than him. I ask Allah that He be merciful to him and tells those scholars to forgive him, and does shafa’at for him. [4]

He also wrote

 أتعجب من ذكره الإِمَام فَخر الدّين الرَّازِيّ فِي كتاب الْمِيزَان فِي الضُّعَفَاء وَكَذَلِكَ السَّيْف الْآمِدِيّ وَأَقُول يالله الْعجب هَذَانِ لَا رِوَايَة لَهما وَلَا جرحهما أحد وَلَا سمع من أحد أَنه ضعفهما فِيمَا ينقلانه من علومهما فَأَي مدْخل لَهما فِي هَذَا الْكتاب ثمَّ إِنَّا لم نسْمع أحدا يُسَمِّي الإِمَام فَخر الدّين بالفخر بل إِمَّا الإِمَام وَإِمَّا ابْن الْخَطِيب وَإِذا ترْجم كَانَ فِي المُحَمَّدين فَجعله فِي حرف الْفَاء وَسَماهُ الْفَخر ثمَّ حلف فِي آخر الْكتاب

أَنه لم يتَعَمَّد فِيهِ هوى نَفسه فَأَي هوى نفس أعظم من هَذَا فإمَّا أَن يكون ورى فِي يَمِينه أَو اسْتثْنى غير الروَاة فَيُقَال لَهُ فَلم ذكرت غَيرهم وَإِمَّا أَن يكون اعْتقد أَن هَذَا لَيْسَ هوى نفس وَإِذا وصل إِلَى هَذَا الْحَد وَالْعِيَاذ بِاللَّه فَهُوَ مطبوع عَلَى قلبه

I am surprised at his discussion of Fakhur ud Deen Radhi in his book Al Mizan in Weak Narrators/ Daif in the same way Saif al Aamadi. I say: By God! this is strange…..They never narrated anything and none of people criticized them, and none of them said that they are Daif/weak in what mentioned in their fields of knowledge, so why was that introduced in their book. And I had not heard anyone naming Imam Fakhr ur Deen by Fakhr, except that with Imam or by Ibn ul Khateeb. When his biography is written, it is written in Mohammadain. But He wrote him in FAA and named him Fakhar. And he took oath in end of his book that he did not introduce bias. I say what is more bias than this. Either he should have kept himself right or excluded them from narrators. Now it will be asked from him why he mentioned them. Or we believe that He had this believe that this is not bias, though he reached that level in bais that may Allah protect us, it was imprinted on his heart [5]

He also said

وَأما تَارِيخ شَيخنَا الذَّهَبِيّ غفر اللَّه لَهُ فَإِنَّهُ عَلَى حسنه وَجمعه مشحون بالتعصب المفرط لَا واخذه اللَّه فَلَقَد أَكثر الوقيعة فِي أهل الدّين أَعنِي الْفُقَرَاء الَّذين هم صفوة الْخلق واستطال بِلِسَانِهِ عَلَى كثير من أَئِمَّة الشافعيين والحنفيين وَمَال فأفرط عَلَى الأشاعرة ومدح فَزَاد فِي المجسمة

As regards to history of our Sheikh Dhabi, may Allah forgive him for his goods, but he has increased in bias. May Allah not catch him for this. Because he attacked a lot of people of religion, and that means those who were elite in creation. And he used his tongue on many of the Imams of Shafais and Hanafis, and attacked Ashaira, and praised Mujassima a lot [6]

 

This is the opinion of a student about his teacher.
