Abu Bakar ibn Khalal writes in his Al-Sunnah

Ahmad bin Mohammad [1] from Abu Talib [2] who said that I asked Abu Abdullah[3] regarding narration of Holy Prophet (asws) to Ali (asws): Whosoever I am Mola of, Ali is his Mola; What is the reason for that? He replied: Do not speak in this, leave it as it comes in the hadeeth. [4]

We also find that Ahmad bin Hanbal tried to avoid Hadeeth-e-Manzila

Abu Bakar al Maroodhi [5] says that I asked Ahmad bin Hanbal regarding saying of Prophet (asws) to Ali (asws): You are like to me like Haroon was to Moses. What is explanation of that?

He said: Keep quiet regarding that, do not ask about this narration. This is how it comes. [6]
