This piece of work is basically a Translation of work of Brother Ismaeel Deobandi. I have not translated word to word, rather tried to convey the message

We find a narration from Imam Ali (asws) in books of Ahlu Sunnah which is used to show superiority of Abu Bakar and Umar. Its subject is somewhat like this that He (asws) said

“If someone gives me superiority over Abu Bakar and Umar, I will lash him as punishment due to this false accusation”

And some narrations say that I will punish him hard by lashing him

These narrations have been mentioned by

1-Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal

2- Ibn Abi Asim

3- Ibn Shaheen

4- Ibn Asaakar

And these chains of narrations mentioned by these Scholars, have weaknesses.

So We will review these chains in summarized form, and show the weakness.

1- ALQAMA’A:-

The first narration in this regards, is narrated by AlQama’a; and it has been mentioned by Ibn Abi Asim in his book “Kitab us Sunnah”. The chain of narration comes like this:-

.

Shiekh Albany termed the chain Hasan/Good, and his wordings are:-

The chain of this narration is Hasan/good; and narrators are all Thiqa/trustworthy except for Shahab bin Kharash where there is dispute regarding his Memory. However Dhabi termed his narrations as Authentic and said that he is truthful; and Hafiz Ibn Hajar also said he is truthful though errs.

However, We feel that Sheikh Albany has been lenient in this regard.

Regardless of presence of Shahab bin Kharash, there is another narrator which has been overlooked by Albany, and he is Abu Ma’shar. His name is Najeeh bin Abdul Rehman Abu Ma’shar al Madani. He is a Weak/daif narrator.

Scholars of Rijal, like Yahya bin Moin and Hafiz ibn Addi termed him Weak

Yahya bin Moin said

He is not strong

And Ibn Addi said

His narrations are written though he is Weak

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal said that he is truthful though he wont make chains strong

Therefore, Allama Dhabi mentioned these opinions in the following words

[Al Kashif, vol. 2, page 317]

This chain has been mentioned by Ahmad bin Hanbal in his book, Fadail us Sahaba; and Researcher of that book, Wasi ullah bin Mohammad Abbas, pointed to weakness of the chain due to Abu Ma’shar. His wordings are

Chain is Weak due to Abu Ma’shar, and he is Najeeh al Madani

[Fadail us Sahaba, by Ahmad bin Hanbal, narration 484]

This proves that Sheikh Albany had made a mistake in terming the chain as Hasan. And it is in fact, WEAK.

2- HAKAM BIN JAHAL:-

Chain of narration from Hakam bin Jahal is like this.

[Fadail us Sahaba, Ahmad bin Hanbal, narration 49, 387]

With some differences in Subject, his narration has been mentioned by Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal as well, however, All of those chains come to us from the narrator, Mohammad bin Talha, and He is taking this narration from Abu Ubaida.

Mohammad bin Talha is Weak/daif narrator and there is criticism on him.

Nisai said He is not strong; and Yahya bin Moin said that His narrations have to be avoided, and in another place he said He is Weak. So Dhabi mentioned these opinions in these words

[Al Kashif, vol. 2, page 183]

Also, the narrator, Abu Ubaida is also Unknown/majhool. His name is Umayya bin Hakam. Dhabi counted him in Weak narrators due to this fact.

He said

Umayya bin Hakam, He is unknown

[Al Mughni fi D’uafa, vol 1, page. 94]

Therefore, researcher of the book Fadail us Sahaba, Wasi ullah bin Mohammad Abbas, accepted weakness of the chain, and said

Chain of narration is Weak due to Weakness of Abu Ubaida.

[Fadail us Sahaba, by Ahmad bin Hanbal, Narration. 49, 387]

3- ABDULLAH BIN KATHEER

Ibn Asaakar mentioned narration from him, and chain of narrators is like this

[Tareekh Damishq, by Ibn Asaakar, vol. 26, page. 343]

Chain of this narration is very Weak.

There is a narrator, Salama bin Rooh, and he has been termed by famous scholar of Rijal, Abu Zara’a, as Munkir ul Hadeeth, i.e, his narrations are rejected. The

Therefore Dhabi writes

[al Kashif, vol. 1, page 475]

Also, there is another huge weakness in this regard, and he is Abu A’az Kadish, from whom Ibn Asaakar took this narration. He is charged as being Liar and Fabricator. And this is a huge criticism. Ibn Hajar Asqalani mentioned this as

Ahmad bin Ubaid ullah Abu A’az bin Kadish: He is famous in being one of Sheikhs of Ibn Asaakar. He acceptged that he fabricated Hadeeth, and then repented. Ibn Najar said that He was a liar, and others also criticised him. Abu Sa’ad bin Sama’ani said that Ibn Nasir criticized him severely. Ibn Asaakar said that Abu A’az heard a person fabricating a narration in honor of Imam Ali (asws), so he also fabricated a narration for Abu Bakar, and then said that I fabricated a narration for honor of Abu Bakar, by God! did i not do great?

[Lisan ul Mizaan, in explanation of Ahmad bin Ubaidullah Abu A’az bin Kadish]

In short, all the chains which come in this regard have weakness, and cannot be termed authentic
