Rafa Yadain means to raise arms in prayers. Let us see what Narrations of Ahlu Sunnah say about it. We would try to narrate it from 10 different Sahaba/Companions of Holy Prophet (asws)

1- Hazrat ‘Ali (asws)

We find in Saeeh Sunan Abi Daood, 1/215, Hadeeth 744

Hazrat Ali (asws) said:- When Holy Prophet (asws) would stand up for Prayers, He would say (Allah o Akbar), and raise His Hands till shoulders, and when He would complete recitation, and would like to go for Ruko’o, he would do the same, and when He would raise from Ruko’o, He would do the same. And He would not raise hands when sitting, And When he would raise after Two Prostrations, He would raise Hands, and say Allah o Akbar

Sheikh Albany terms the Hadeeth Hasan Saheeh

Pakistani Scholar, Hafiz Abu Tahir Zubair ‘Ali Zai, terms the Chain Hasan in His research upon Sunan Abi Daood, 1/563; and mentioned that Tirmidhi termed it Hasan Saheeh, where as Ibn Khuzaima Authenticated it as well

2- Abdullah bin Umar

We find in Saheeh Bukhari, 1/148

Narrated by ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar

I saw that whenever Allah’s Apostle stood for the prayer, he used to raise both his hands up to the shoulders, and used to do the same on saying the Takbir for bowing and on raising his head from it and used to say, “Sami a-l-lahu Liman hamida”. But he did not do that (i.e. raising his hands) in prostrations.

Also, we find in Bukhari, 1/148

Narrated by ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar
I saw Allah’s Apostle opening the prayer with the Takbir and raising his hands to the level of his shoulders at the time of saying the Takbir, and on saying the Takbir for bowing he did the same; and when he said, “Sami a-l-lahu Liman hamida “, he did the same and then said, “Rabbana wa laka-l-hamd.” But he did not do the same on prostrating and on lifting the head from it.”

And this is what He acted upon as well, and would say that it is from Holy Prophet (asws)

Let us another narration from Saheeh Bukhari, 1/148

Narrated by Nafi’
Whenever Ibn ‘Umar started the prayer with Takbir, he used to raise his hands: whenever he bowed, he used to raise his hands (before bowing) and also used to raise his hands on saying, “Sami a-l-lahu Liman hamida”, and he used to do the same on rising from the second Rak’a (for the 3rd Rak’a). Ibn ‘Umar said: “The Prophet used to do the same.”

3- Malik bin Huwairith

We find in Saheeh Bukhari,1/148

Narrated by Abu Qilaba
I saw Malik bin Huwairith saying Takbir and raising both his hands (on starting the prayers and raising his hands on bowing and also on raising his head after bowing. Malik bin Huwairith said, “Allah’s Apostle did the same.”

Similar Narration is also present in Saheeh Sunan Abi Daood, 1/215, Narration 745; and Sheikh Albany termed it Saheeh

Abu Huraira said that when Prophet (asws) would offer prayers, He would raise His Hands till shoulders, and say Allah-o-Akbar, and start prayers, and when He would go for Ruko’o, and when Prostrate

Sheikh Shoaib ul Arnawut termed it Hadeeth Saheeh except for the last part of Prostration, and termed this chain Daif/weak

Wa’il b. Hujr reported: He saw the Prophet of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) raising his hands at the time of beginning the prayer and reciting takbir, and according to Hammam (the narrator), the hands were lifted opposite to ears. He (the Prophet) then wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when he was about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then lifted them, and then recited takbir and bowed down, and when (he came back to the erect position) he recited:” Allaah listened to him who praised Him.” And when prostrates. he prostrated between the two palms.

10- Narration of Abu Hameed al Sa’adi

Abu Daood mentions in his Sunan, 1/194, a Narration authenticated by Sheikh Albany, and it states

Abu Hameed mentioned in front of 10 Companions of Prophet (asws) including Abu Qatada, He said: I am more aware of Prayer of Prophet asws then You. They said: How come? You are not following him more or older than us in companionship. He said: Why not. They said: Ok narrate then. He said: When He asws would stand for prayer, He would raise hands till shoulder,……….Then He would say Allah o Akbar, and go for Ruko’o…..Then He would raise head, and say [سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ], and then raise hand  till it reaches shoulder……

Sheikh Albany termed it Saheeh in Saheeh Sunan Abi Daood, 1/212.

Hafiz Abu Tahir Zubair Ali Zai also termed the Chain Saheeh in his research upon the book, 1/550
