Many sunnis criticize the reward mentioned for Ziarat of Imam Hussein (asws). They object to those narrations which state that if this Ziarat is performed, one will get rewards of Haj or that his sins are forgiven etc. Some ignorant would even charge that Shias don’t perform Haj.

Please keep in mind that Haj is one of the obligatory acts. Allah states in Surah Aal-e-Imran

  1.          فِيهِ آيَاتٌ بَيِّنَاتٌ مَقَامُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ۖ وَمَنْ دَخَلَهُ كَانَ آمِنًا ۗ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا ۚ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ

 In it are clear signs, the standing place of Ibrahim, and whoever enters it shall be secure, and pilgrimage to the House is incumbent upon men for the sake of Allah, (upon) everyone who is able to undertake the journey to it; and whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above any need of the worlds.

Similarly, Syed al-Khoi mentions

في صحيحة ذريح المحاربي، (عن أبي عبد الله (ع) قال: من مات ولم يحج حجة الاسلام لم يمنعه من ذلك حاجة تجحف به، أو مرض لا يطيق فيه الحج أو سلطان يمنعه فليمت يهوديا أو نصرانيا)

In Saheeh/Authentic narration of Zareeh al-Moharbi from Imam al Sadiq (asws)

“If a person dies without performing the obligatory Haj, while there was nothing that prevented him from doing so, that is, he was not having any need or problem and neither was he sick nor any stong person/ruler stood in his way, then Allah shale raise him in Qiayama with the Christians or jews”[i]

As regards to those narrations which state of rewards, please keep in mind that rewards are mentioned as an incentive. It is for the reason that people get inclined to it.

Let me explain.

Some time there is an act which is “obligatory”, and another act which is “recommended”; and the reward of recommended act is stated higher than that of the obligatory act. Why? So that People are inclined to it. Let me give an example

Famous Scholar of Ahlu Sunnah, Mohammad Safareeni mentions

ابتدا السلام افضل من ردہ، مع ان ابتدا السنۃ، و ردہ واجب، و ھذا احد المواضع التی السنۃ افضل فیھا من الواجب

Initiating a greeting (Salam) is greater in status than replying to it, though initiating it is a Sunnah while replying to it is obligatory. And it is one of those instances where Sunnah is greater in status than obligatory acts. [ii]

But why it is so? It’s quite simple? So that people are inclined to initiate it.

Please keep in mind that there are authentic Sunni narrations where reward of Umran and Haj has been promised for very simple acts.

 Let us see one example

558 – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو تَوْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ مُتَطَهِّرًا إِلَى صَلَاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ فَأَجْرُهُ كَأَجْرِ الْحَاجِّ الْمُحْرِمِ، وَمَنْ خَرَجَ إِلَى تَسْبِيحِ الضُّحَى لَا يَنْصِبُهُ إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ فَأَجْرُهُ كَأَجْرِ الْمُعْتَمِرِ، وَصَلَاةٌ عَلَى أَثَرِ صَلَاةٍ لَا لَغْوَ بَيْنَهُمَا كِتَابٌ فِي عِلِّيِّينَ»

Holy Prophet (asws) said:- If anyone goes out from his house after performing ablution for saying the prescribed prayer in congregation (in the mosque), his reward will be like that of one who goes for hajj pilgrimage after wearing ihram (robe worn by the hajj pilgrims).

And he who goes out to say the mid-morning (duha) prayer, and takes the trouble for this purpose, will take the reward like that of a person who performs umrah. And a prayer followed by a prayer with no worldly talk during the gap between them will be recorded in Illiyyun. [iii]

Sheikh Zubair Ali Zai has graded the chain as Hasan[iv].

 Also, Sheikh Albani has graded the Chain as Hasan. [v]

Let us see another example.

6346 – 2144 – «من صلى الفجر في جماعة ثم قعد يذكر الله حتى تطلع الشمس ثم صلى ركعتين كانت له كأجر حجة وعمرة تامة تامة تامة» .

(صحيح) [ت] عن أنس. صحيح الترغيب 464.

Holy Prophet (asws) said: whosoever offers Farj prayer in congregation, and then sits doing dhikr of Allah, till sunrise, and then offers 2 rak’at prayers, he has the reward like reward of complete complete complete Haj and Umrah

Sheikh Albany has graded it as Saheeh/Authentic. [vi]

Sheikh Ibn Baaz states

هذا الحديث له طرق لا بأس بها، فيعتبر بذلك من باب الحسن لغيره،

This narration has chains which have no problem, so it is reliable and in the category of “Hasan with support of others”. [vii]

If you think, it is very simple act, but you get this much reward. Rather if you perform it daily, you will get this reward daily.

But question is, why so much reward has been stated? As I said in the beginning, so that people get inclined to it, and it acts as an incentive.
