Let us see this narration from Musnad imam Ahmad

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ (1) ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَوَّامُ، حَدَّثَنِي أَسْوَدُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ بْنِ خُوَيْلِدٍ الْعَنْزِيِّ، قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا أَنَا عِنْدَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلَانِ يَخْتَصِمَانِ فِي رَأْسِ عَمَّارٍ، يَقُولُ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا: أَنَا قَتَلْتُهُ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو: لِيَطِبْ بِهِ أَحَدُكُمَا نَفْسًا لِصَاحِبِهِ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ – يَعْنِي – رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ [قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ] : ” كَذَا قَالَ أَبِي: يَعْنِي رَسُولَ اللهِ (2) صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ” يَقُولُ: ” تَقْتُلُهُ الْفِئَةُ الْبَاغِيَةُ “، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: أَلَا تُغْنِي عَنَّا مَجْنُونَكَ يَا عَمْرُو؟ فَمَا بَالُكَ مَعَنَا؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ أَبِي شَكَانِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” أَطِعْ أَبَاكَ مَا دَامَ حَيًّا، وَلَا تَعْصِهِ ” فَأَنَا مَعَكُمْ وَلَسْتُ أُقَاتِلُ

Hazrat Hunzila narrates that once I was sitting with Mawia when two men came fighting. Each of them said that he martyred Hazrat Ammar (r.a). Abdullah bin Amr said: each of you should congratulate each other because I had heard Holy Prophet asws saying that Ammar would be killed by Rebel group. Mawia said:Why are you then with us? o Amr (Mawia is speaking to his father now)! Why do you not make us free of his mad person of yours? He replied: Once my father complained to Holy Prophet about me. And He told me to Obey my father for whole of my life, and not to disobey him. That is why I am with you, but not there in fights

AUTHENTICITY

Sheikh Shoaib termed the Chain Sahih/Authentic in His research upon Musnad Ahmad, 11/96. and so was the case with sheikh Ahmad Shakir

Haithmi also authenticated this Narration in his Majma-uz-Zawaid, 7/244, and said

رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ.

Narrated by Ahmad and Narrators are all trustworthy

[7386/3] وفي رواية له صحيحة عن حنظلة بن خويلد قال:”إني لجالس عند معاوية، إذ دخل رجلان يختصمان في رأس عمار، وكل واحد منهما يقول: أنا قتلته، فقال عبدالله بن عمرو: ليطب أحدكما به نفسا لصاحبه، فإني سمعت رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – يقول: تقتله الفئة الباغية. قال معاوية: ألا تغني عنا مجنونك يا عمرو، فما له معنا؟! قال: إني معكم ولست أقاتل، إن أبي شكاني إلى رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم -، فقال لي رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم -: أطع أباك ما دام حيا ولا تعصه. فأنا معكم ولست أقاتل”.


CONCLUSION

So, what we learn from this is that Mawia did not accept the Hadeeth of Sahabi just on the ground that he was Sahabi
Also, we see that he charged him with madness

will nawasib charge him with toheen-e-sahaba/Insult to Companion????
