The narration according to which `Umar (ra) congratulated `Ali (ra) on the event of Ghadeer is weak.
أخبرنا أبو الحسن بن قبيس ، نا ـ وأبو النجم بدر بن عبد الله ، أنا ـ بكر الخطيب ، نا عبد الله بن علي بن محمد بن بشران ، أنا علي بن عمر الحافظ ، أنا أبو نصر حبشون بن موسى بن أيوب الخلال ، نا علي بن سعيد الرملي ، نا ضمرة بن ربيعة القرشي ، عن ابن شوذب ، عن مطر الوراق ، عن شهر بن حوشب ، عن أبي هريرة ، قال : من صام يوم ثماني عشرة من ذي الحجة كتب له صيام ستين شهرا ، وهو يوم غدير خم لما أخذ النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بيد علي بن أبي طالب ، فقال : ” ألست أولى بالمؤمنين ؟ ” قالوا : بلى يا رسول الله ، قال : ” من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه ” ، فقال عمر بن الخطاب : بخ بخ لك يابن أبي طالب ، أصبحت مولاي ومولى كل مسلم ، فأنزل الله عز وجل : اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم سورة المائدة آية 3 ، ومن صام يوم سبعة وعشرين من رجب كتب له صيام ستين شهرا ، وهو أول يوم نزل جبريل عليه السلام بالرسالةIt is narrated from Abu Hurairah that he said : whoever fasts the day of the eighteenths of dhil-hijjah it’s like he fasted sixty months, and this is the day of Ghadeer Khum when Rasool Allah(saw) took the hand of Ali and said : Haven’t I more right over the believers? They answered : Indeed, O Messenger of Allah. He said : whoever i’m his mawla, then Ali is his Mawla. Omar ibn khattab said: Congratulations, O son of Abu Talib, as you have become my Mawla and the Mawla of all Muslims. On this, Allah revealed, today i have completed for you your religion. And whoever fasts on the 27th of Rajab, fasts of sixty months is written for him. And this was the first day on which Jibrael (as) came with revelation.
Tarikh Ibn `Asakir
This narration is weak due to the Tafarrud and Tadlees of Shahr bin Hawshab.
In this short piece of article, We will see a few authentic Sunni narrations which prove that Imam Ali (asws) did argue with Hadeeth-e-Ghadeer, and made Sahaba/Companions of Prophet (asws) testify on its authenticity
.
We see these narrations mentioned by Haithmi in his Majma-uz-Zawaid,. I will mention it by Narrators.

1- Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad
.
وعن زياد بن أبي زياد قال سمعت على بن أبى طالب ينشد الناس فقال أنشد الله رجلا مسلما سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول يوم غدير خم ما قال لما قام فقام اثنا عشر بدريا فشهدوا.
رواه أحمد ورجاله ثقات.
this hadeeth is from al-kafi, and it is with sahih shia chain inshallah
this hadeeth also proves that the verse of completion of deen was revealed in ghadeer
in arabic version, it is in al-kafi, vol 1, page 289, hadeeth 4
we find in al-bidaya wa nihaya
وقد روى النسائي في سننه عن محمد بن المثنى، عن يحيى بن حماد، عن أبي معاوية، عن الأعمش، عن حبيب ابن أبي ثابت، عن أبي الطفيل، عن زيد بن أرقم قال: لما رجع رسول الله من حجة الوداع ونزل غدير حم أمر بدوحات فقممن ثم قال: ((كأني قد دعيت فأجبت إني قد تركت فيكم الثقلين كتاب الله، وعترتي أهل بيتي، فانظروا كيف تخلفوني فيهما، فإنهما لن يفترقا حتَّى يردا علي الحوض)).
ثم قال: ((الله مولاي، وأنا ولي كل مؤمن)) ثم أخذ بيد علي فقال: ((من كنت مولاه، فهذا وليه، اللهم وال من والاه، وعاد من عاداه)).
فقلت لزيد: سمعته من رسول الله صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم فقال: ما كان في الدوحات أحد إلا رآه بعينيه، وسمعه بأذنيه، تفرد به النسائي من هذا الوجه. (ج/ص:5/229)
قال شيخنا أبو عبد الله الذهبي: وهذا حديث صحيح.

we find in masnad imam ahmad, vol 4
حدثنا عبد الله حدثني أبي حدثنا حماد بن سلمة أنبأنا علي بن زيد عن عدي بن ثابت عن البراء بن عازب قال:
(كنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فنزلنا بغدير خم فنودي فينا الصلاة جامعة وكسح لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تحت شجرتين فصلى الظهر وأخذ بيد علي رضي الله تعالى عنه فقال ألستم تعلمون أني أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم قالوا بلى قال ألستم تعلمون أني أولى بكل مؤمن من نفسه قالوا بلى قال فأخذ بيد علي فقال من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه اللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه قال فلقيه عمر بعد ذلك فقال له هنيئا يا ابن أبي طالب أصبحت وأمسيت مولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة
قال أبو عبد الرحمن حدثنا هدبة بن خالد حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن علي بن زيد عن عدي بن ثابت عن البراء بن عازب عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نحوه).

bara bin azib said that we were with the holy prophet when we reached ghadeer; so call for salat was given; and prophet offered the prayer of zuhur; and then hold the hand of ali asws;
and said “am i not having more authority that momins over their lives?”
we said “yes”;
he said “whosoever i am mola of, ali is his mola; o allah! be friend to his friend; and be enemy to his enemy”
then umar said “blessed you are o ali ibn abi talib! u had this evening when u become the mola of momin and momina”
keep one thing in mind

this hadeeth has two chains;
and i ll give u takhreej of both
ahmad shakir said about the first chain
hadeeth 18391, page 185, vol 14: isnaad hasan
hadeeth 18391 م , page 186, vol 14: isnaad sahih
ahmad shakir says in the foot notes of first one that it is there in sunan ibn maja as well
i checked it out there; in SAHIN SUNAN IBN MAJA
which has takhreej of albani
it is there on page 56, vol 1, hadeeth 94-115
and albani says that
SAHIH
but keep in mind that ibn maja has not used these words
rather skipped those
this chain is supported by another chain
وقال عبد الرزاق: أنا معمر، عن علي بن زيد بن جدعان، عن عدي بن ثابت، عن البراء بن عازب قال: خرجنا مع رسول الله حتى نزلنا غدير خم بعث منادياً ينادي.
فلما اجتمعنا قال: ((ألست أولى بكم من أنفسكم ؟))
قلنا: بلى يا رسول الله !.
قال: ((ألست أولى بكم من أمهاتكم ؟)).
قلنا: بلى يا رسول الله.
قال: ((ألست أولى بكم من آبائكم ؟)).
قلنا: بلى يا رسول الله !.
قال: ((ألست ألست ألست ؟)).
قلنا: بلى يا رسول الله.
قال: ((من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه، اللهم والِ من والاه، وعادِ من عاداه)).
فقال عمر بن الخطاب: هنيئاً لك يا ابن أبي طالب أصبحت اليوم ولي كل مؤمن.

– Ma`mar (Mu`ammar) b. Rashid, Abu `Urwah al-Azdi al-Basri – `Ali b. Zayd b.
Jud`an, Abu al-Hasan al-Taymi al-Basri – `Adi b. Thabit, al-Khatmi al-Ansari al-
Kufi – Al-Bara’ b. `Azib b. al-Harith al-Awsi al-Ansari:
Traveling with the Messenger of Allah [s], we stopped at the pond of Khumm
and the Prophet [s] sent someone to call upon people to gather. When we came
together he said: ‘Do I not have more right with you than your own selves?’
We said: ‘Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!’ He continued: ‘Do I not have
more right with you than your mothers?’ We said: ‘Yes indeed, O Messenger of
Allah!’ He continued: ‘Do I not have more right with you than your fathers?’
We replied: ‘Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!’ He kept asking ‘Do I not
have’, and we kept answering ‘Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!’ He
concluded: ‘To whomever I am his master, ‘Ali is his master. O’ God, love
those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him.’ ‘Umar b.
al-Khattab said: ‘Congratulations O Ibn Abi Talib, today you have become the
master of every believer.’

let me share a sahih hadeeth with you where companions called mola ali
their mola
let me share it from majma
14610- عن رباح بن الحارث قال: جاء رهط إلى علي بالرحبة قالوا: السلام عليك يا مولانا، فقال: كيف أكون مولاكم وأنتم قوم عرب؟ قالوا: سمعنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم غدير خم يقول:
”من كنت مولاه فهذا مولاه”.
قال رباح: فلما مضوا تبعتهم فقلت: من هؤلاء؟ قالوا: نفر من الأنصار فيهم أبو أيوب الأنصاري
.
a delegation came to meet ali asws; and they said “salam be on you, our mola (molaNA)”
mola said “how come i be you mola while you are arab?
they said “we heard from prophet in ghadeer khum that whosoever i am mola of, ali is his mola”
riyah said that i followed as to who they were,
i asked “so who were they?”
they said “a group of ansaar and amongst them is abu ayub ansari
haithmi further said
رواه أحمد والطبراني إلا أنه قال: قالوا: سمعنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول:
”من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه، اللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه”.
وهذا أبو أيوب بيننا، فحسر أبو أيوب العمامة عن وجهه ثم قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول:
”من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه، اللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه”.
ورجال أحمد ثقات.
this is the narration of ahmad; and in that of tabarani; we find that they said
“we heard prophet asws
whosoever i am mola of, ali is his mola; o allah! be friend to his friend; and be enemy to his enemy”
and in them was abu ayub ansari who had turban on his face; and then he said i heard prophet saying
whosoever i am mola of, ali is his mola; o allah! be friend to his friend; and be enemy to his enemy”

wasiullah bin abbas said isnaad sahih
and zarb-e-haidari
جاء رهط إلى علي بالرحبة ، فقالوا : السلام عليك يا مولانا ، قال : كيف أكون مولاكم ، وأنتم قوم عرب ؟ قالوا : سمعنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم غدير خم يقول : من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه قال رباح : فلما مضوا تبعتهم فسألت : من هؤلاء ؟ قالوا : نفر من الأنصار فيهم أبو أيوب الأنصاري

خلاصة حكم المحدث: إسناده جيد رجاله ثقات
there is one question which needs to be explained
and that is
why mola said that you are arab, how can i be mola?
this has been explained in
SHARH-E-KHASAIS-E-ALI, qari faizi, page 418, published maktaba baab-ul-ilm, lahore
he writes in that
“hazrat ali asked how can i be your mola when you are arabs (WHO DO NOT ACCEPT ANYONE AS THEIR LEADER EASILY)
”
So, hope you understand what mola ali asws meant by that
we find in surat ul maidaah, verse 67
يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْكَافِرِينَ
O Messenger! deliver what bas been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people; surely Allah will not guide the unbelieving people
let us see what sunni tafaseer had to say about this
the first is تفسير الدر المنثور في التفسير بالمأثور/ السيوطي
and we find
وأخرج ابن أبي حاتم وابن مردويه وابن عساكر عن أبي سعيد الخدري قال: نزلت هذه الآية { يا أيها الرسول بلغ ما أنزل إليك من ربك } على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم غدير خم، في علي بن أبي طالب
abu saeed khudri said that this verse was revealed on holy prophet asws in ghadeer khum regarding ali bin abi talib asws.
samewise, we find that
وأخرج ابن مردويه عن ابن مسعود قال: كنا نقرأ على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم { يا أيها الرسول بلغ ما أنزل إليك من ربك } أن علياً مولى المؤمنين { وإن لم تفعل فما بلغت رسالته والله يعصمك من الناس }
ibn masood said that we use to recite this verse in the times of holy prophet asws as {O Messenger! deliver what bas been revealed to you from your Lord} that ali is mola of momineen; {and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people}

تفسير فتح القدير/ الشوكاني
that
وأخرج ابن أبي حاتم، وابن مردويه، وابن عساكر، عن أبي سعيد الخدري قال: نزلت هذه الآية: { يَـٰأَيُّهَا ٱلرَّسُولُ بَلّغْ مَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ } على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم غدير خمّ، في عليّ بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه. وأخرج ابن مردويه، عن ابن مسعود قال: كنا نقرأ على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «يا أيها الرسول بلغ ما أنزل إليك من ربك إن عليا مولى المؤمنين وإن لم تفعل فما بلغت رسالته والله يعصمك من الناس»
this narration can also be found in tafsir mazhari, vol 3, page 153; and tafsir fath-ul-bayan le qanoji, vol 2, page 293.
and more interestingly, we find in تفسير مفاتيح الغيب ، التفسير الكبير/ الرازي
that
نزلت الآية في فضل علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام، ولما نزلت هذه الآية أخذ بيده وقال: ” من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه الّلهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه ” فلقيه عمر رضي الله عنه فقال: هنيئاً لك يا ابن طالب أصبحت مولاي ومولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة، وهو قول ابن عباس والبراء بن عازب ومحمد بن علي
this verse was revealed in the glory of ali bin abi talib asws, and when it was revealed, he(holy prophet asws) held his hand and said “whosoever i am mola of, ali is his mola; o allah be friend to his friend, and be enemy to his enemy”
on this,umar said
“blessed are you, now, you are my mola and mola of every momin and momina”
and this is the saying of ibn abbas, bara bin azib, and mohammad bin ali.
we find in al-kafi, vol 4, book of haj, chapter of masjid-e-ghadeer, page 566 and 567, hadeeth 2 that
– الكليني : محمد بن يحيى عن محمد بن الحسين عن الحجال عن عبد الصمد بن بشير عن حسان الجمال قال:
” حملت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام من المدينة إلى مكة فلما انتهينا إلى مسجد الغدير نظر إلى ميسرة المسجد فقال: ذلك موضع قدم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله حيث قال: “من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه” ثم نظر ـ أي الإمام الصادق عليه السلام ـ إلى الجانب الآخر فقال: ذلك موضع فسطاط أبي فلان [أبي بكرٍ] و فلان [عمرٍ] وسالم مولى أبي حذيفة وأبي عبيدة الجراح فلما أن رأوه رافعاً يديه قال بعضهم لبعض: انظروا إلى عينيه تدور كأنهما عينا مجنون، فنزل جبريل عليه السلام بهذه الآية: “وإن يكاد الذين كفروا ليزلقونك بأبصارهم لما سمعوا الذكر ويقولون إنه لمجنون وماهو إلاّ ذكر للعالمين“.
