This thread is deduced from the work of brother Asadullah Ghalib.

Let us see the references & authenticity of narration of Holy Prophet (a.s) in view of scholars of Ahlusunnah. I will be giving examples of 7 scholars only who considered it to be authentic. For more, refer to the link given. The narration says

إني تارك فيكم خليفتين كتاب الله عز وجل حبل ممدود ما بين السماء والأرض أو ما بين السماء إلى الأرض وعترتي أهل بيتي وإنهما لن يفترقا حتى يردا علي الحوض

Holy Prophet asws said: I am leaving two Caliphs behind me: Book of Allah-which is a rope between Skies and Earth; and My Ahlubait. They will not separate till they reach pond


1- Sheikh Nasir ud Albany

He included this in his work, Sahih o Daif Jami al Sagheer wa Ziadathu, 1/423, and termed it Sahih


4223 – إني تارك فيكم ما إن تمسكتم به لن تضلوا بعدي أحدهما أعظم من الآخر كتاب الله حبل ممدود من السماء إلى الأرض و عترتي أهل بيتي و لن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض فانظروا كيف تخلفوني فيهما
( ت ) عن زيد بن أرقم .
قال الشيخ الألباني : ( صحيح ) انظر حديث رقم : 2458 في صحيح الجامع

Holy Prophet (a.s) said: I am leaving behind in you, if you be with them, You will not get astray. One of them, greater than later one, is Book of Allah, which is a rope between Skies and Earth; and My Progeny Ahlubait; they will not separate till they reach Pond. So have a look as how you deal with them after me

Sheikh Albany said: Sahih

He termed this narration as Hadeeth Sahih in his takhreej of the book, Kitab-us-Sunnah Ibn Abi Asim, named Zilal-ul-Jannah fi Takhreej us Sunnah, page 351, narration 754

2- Sheikh Shoaib ul Arnawut

This narration is present in Musnad Ahmad, 5/181 with takhreej of Sheikh Shoaib ul Arnawut.


21618 – حدثنا عبد الله حدثني أبي ثنا الأسود بن عامر ثنا شريك عن الركين عن القاسم بن حسان عن زيد بن ثابت قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم : انى تارك فيكم خليفتين كتاب الله حبل ممدود ما بين السماء والأرض أو ما بين السماء إلى الأرض وعترتي أهل بيتي وإنهما لن يتفرقا حتى يردا على الحوض
تعليق شعيب الأرنؤوط : حديث صحيح بشواهده دون قوله : ” وإنهما لن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض ” وهذا إسناد ضعيف لسوء حفظ شريك

Sheikh Shoaib says that Hadeeth is Sahih due to supports, except for the part “they will not separate till they reach Pond”. This chain is weak due to weakness in memory of Shareek

3- Sheikh Hamza Ahmad Zain

In his Takhreej of Musnad Ahmad, 16/28; He termed the chain

إسناده حسن

Chain is Hasan/good

4- Hafiz Noor ud Deen Haithmi

He said in his book, Majma-uz-Zawaid, 9/87


14957- عن زيد بن ثابت قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:
“إني تارك فيكم خليفتين: كتاب الله عز وجل حبل ممدود ما بين السماء والأرض – أو ما بين السماء إلى الأرض – وعترتي أهل بيتي، وإنهما لن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض”.
رواه أحمد وإسناده جيد.

Narrated by Ahmad, and Chain is Great

In another place, he also mentioned in Majma-uz-Zawaid, 1/170

784 – وَعَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – قَالَ: «إِنِّي تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمْ خَلِيفَتَيْنِ: كِتَابَ اللَّهِ، وَأَهْلَ بَيْتِي، وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَتَفَرَّقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَى الْحَوْضِ».
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ.

Narrated by Tabarani, and Narrators are all thiqa

This opinion of Haithmi has been mentioned by Sayooti in his Jami-ul-Hadeeth, 35/52


37832- عن زيد بن ثابت عن رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – أنه قال: تركت فيكم خليفتين كتاب الله وأهل بيتى يردان على الحوض جميعا (ابن جرير) [كنز العمال 1667]
أخرجه أيضًا: أحمد (5/189، رقم 21697) ، وابن قانع (2/603) ، والطبرانى (5/153، رقم 4921) . قال الهيثمى (1/170) : رواه الطبرانى ورجاله ثقات.

5- Abu Al Abbass Shahab ud Deen al Boseri

He writes in his book, Itihaaf ul Khera al Mahrat Bazawaid al Masaneed al Ashra, 6/329


5950 / 2 – رَوَاهُ عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ: ثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، ثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنِ الرُّكَيْنِ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ حَسَّانٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -: “إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ مَا إِنْ تَمَسَّكْتُمْ بِهِ لَنْ تَضِلُّوا: كِتَابُ اللَّهِ- عَزَّ وَجَلَّ- وَعِتْرَتِي، وَإِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا الْحَوْضَ“.
هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ رُوَاتُهُ ثِقَاتٌ.

Narrators of this chain are all Thiqa

6- Wasi ullah bin Mohammad Abbass

He said about the narration in Fadail-us-Sahaba by Ahmad bin Hanbal,2/603


“Chain is Hasan with support of others. Shareek has weakness in memory, but it has supporting evidence.
And Rakeen bin Rabi’i is thiqa Tabai’i. Ahmad, Nisai, Ibn Moin etc termed him thiqa……
And Qasim bin Hasan Aamiri is Young Tabai’i Thiqa, termed thiqa by Ahmad bin Salih. and Ibn Saheen mentioned him in Thiqaat. And Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqaat………
And Hadeeth is Sahih”


7- Abu Abdullah Mustafa bin al Adwi

He mentioned this in his book, Al Sahih al Musnad min Fadail us Sahaba, page 248; and termed the narration “Sahih with support of others”
